I read this but didn't want to comment as I/m not sure. I have read the blocks are the same on the Aerostar/Explorer/Ranger 4.0 motors. Not sure about 1989 since I thought the 4.0 was new for all Fords in 1990. Plus you say a O/D trans but all trans had O/D - some autos and rest manuals.
I should have spec the trans, its an a4ld i beleave. The engine is definitly going into the exploder (i only call it that because thats what it did...on I-95 50 miles from home ) but i dont want to use the stock trans because overdrive is out. I would like to put the van trans in, but i dont want to loose my 4wd, then again i have to do somthing or im going to be left parting it out, and i like it to much for that.
if the trans is a 4x2 that you are going to put in it wont work without changing the output shaft and exstension housing.this means disassy. the trans and swapping components.
A4LD is the same trans used in the Explorers. And yes the output shaft was changed so it could hook up to the transfer case. You need to look at the 2 transmissions but I would expect you could swap the 2 tail sections/shafts and have eveything line up again. But since these transmissions are crap anyway, why not get the original one rebuilt? Unless the van's trans is new, it may be on its wy out soon too. There have been dozens of threads posted in here on these trannys.
Dont have the money for a rebuild, but if i can just swap the parts then its worth it. The van was wrecked in kentuckey on vacation and everything was in perfect order.
the parts you need to swap require a total tear down of the trans.there for its at the point of building.the out put shaft is retained buy a snap ring in the rear planetery .
