94 F250

Hey fellas

I have decided to buy a 94 f250 5.8 auto 4x4 extended cab and just wanted everyones opinions on what to look for and what to expect to have to fix, as far as how good are the automatic transmissions. All of my ford trucks have had 5 speeds. How good is the transfer case. And how dependable is the 351. My ford trucks have had the 300, one of which was a 4x4 but not sure if the transfer case is the same in a half and 3/4 ton. The truck has 232000 miles. I know I flenched too. I drove the truck. I started it up cold and again while it was hot. It started up perfect everytime. Doesnt smoke or knock a bit. Transmission shifts great and the transfer case shifts and engages great. I went down the highway took my hands off the wheel, straight as an arrow. I thought that was good considering it has a 4in lift and 285/75/16. The only downsides are the rear fuel pump is bad, and the compressor is bad. I can get the truck for $3500. NADA low retail is $5200ish and high retail is $8200ish. It is an XLT everything works but the A/C. It has a mammoth front bumper/grille guard and rear bumper. Interior is decent a little dirty but a weekend project. It even has the spare.

Any thoughts is greatly appreciated

I personally think you can find a lower miles truck for that price especailly if gas doesn't drop soon. All the 351w I have seen have been bad on mpg. The automatics from that year have problems if they aren't taken care of. How is the fluid? The t-case is probably a bw 1356 which isn't bad but it's not a np205.

Have you checked Ebay?

Expect about 10-12mpg, tops. With 2wd and a 4.10 rear and stock tires (235/85r16), I peak at 12 in the summer and bottom out at 10 in the winter. I would have to agree with Chris, though, that price sounds pretty high for a truck with that many miles, and with the price of gas where it is. The 351w is a much better engine than the 302 IMHO, but at 232k, you could definitely be on borrowed time. The E4OD is a pretty good tranny, especially if it's been rebuilt and updated, otherwise the earlier versions were a little iffy. If you don't have documentation on when and where the engine and tranny have been rebuilt, I'd take a pass. If they both go, you'd be more than doubling the price of the truck. You also didn't say anything about engine compression. Just because it doesn't obviously smoke and starts easy doesn't mean there aren't internal problems.

Happy truck hunting!

Jason
