Ok guys having a problem here. My 97 4.2l F150 won't start. Well it kind of does. It takes a few secs for it to fire but when it does it dies. It doesn't even start completely. RPM's go up a little and then it dies. It isn't hydrolocked .... been there done that. Doesn't seem like the starter. Isn't the battery since it is new. Could it be the alternator? This morning it was running and under acceleration from a stop it was running rough. Could it be maybe stuff in my fuel...maybe it is time to change that fuel filter?
changed the fuel filter today. THAT WAS HELL just getting the filter off with the plastic tool! Aso put new plugs and wires on it while i was messing with it. still the same problem. Its like it is starving for air or fuel or something.
Turned out to be the MAF sensor. Guy at dealership said that it could be caused by the K&N filter I had. I've read about that on here. Kind of sucks and damn those dealerships are expensive!
"COULD" be is the key word.
If any oil media filter is grossly over-oiled, the oil can get sucked thru the filter and contaminate the wire in the MAF sensor.
If your filter was not over-oiled, I doubt that was the cause.
I sold my 2000 with 170,000 miles on it, it had a MAC filter and I never had any problems.
What is the MAF sensor? I have been having the same problem since I bought my 97' 150 4.2 a year ago. I had the IAC replaced and a complete tune up, cleaned injectors, intake manifold, new plugs, wires, o2. I spent over $1,200 and it still starts like crap. I was wondering if it might be the coils?
