BLOWING Oil filter off!!!

I am helping my brother with an 87 ranger he aquired for free. It was leaking oil BAD, we pulled the engine and found the rear main seal mia. We replaced it and put everything back together.
It will fire up and run but as soon as the oil pressure comes up it immediatly blows the filter back and sprays oil everywhere. It is now leaking at the back of the motor again, so it probably blew the rear main out again.
I suspect the pump is screwed. I think the pressure regulator is stuck or something.
What do you guys think.

BTW I replaced the oil filter adapter, suspecting damaged threads, but it still does it.

I'd say it's time to hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and take a reading. On the rear main seal, I've only seen those blow when there is excessive crankcase pressure. I'd check the crankcase ventilations systems carefully.

Almost just after it starts it sprays oil, so a mechanical gauge might not be too helpful. We did have i running decent once for about 10 min. When we started it up again and gave it a little gas, boom the filter shot off.

Sure sounds like VERY bad rings or a hole in a piston! Take all of the breather caps off and start her up. If a bunch of smoke comes out right away do a compression test.. I betcha that "FREE" engine is a total loss.. In fact just do the compression check.. see if it is one or ALL of the pistons.

Oil pressure relief is sticking. It should open at a preset pressure (I think it should be around 60 pounds) The oil filter is first in line past the oil pump. From the filter the oil journals should lead to the main and rod bearings then up to the cam and then flows back down the drains to the pan. When the relief sticks closed and the engine is warm you might get away with the pressure at idle but when the rpm come up you are seeing pressures in excess of 100 pounds when the filter pops out. The excessive oil pressure is also pushing the rear main seal out just like a hydraulic piston. I am not sure where the relief is but I suspect that it is in the pump. It would have to be before the filter and there is not much between the pump and the filter. I suspect that if you change the pump and the rear main seal again and you will be back in business. Those little 4 bangers are a little wimpy but will run forever...
