Rebuilding a ZF 5

Have any of you rebuilt your own ZF? I am looking to upgrade from a M5R2; a ZF 5 is running $150ish here, the bearing kit is $100, and I don't like anyone else touching my truck. Is this worth doing myself, or is $1200 for a rebuit worth it?

Thanks,
Mike

I rebuilt the ZF (351W) that's in my crewcab at the moment, as well as the one (460)sitting on a dolly on the garage floor. Wasn't very difficult at all. I spent two days on each, with a ton of interruptions. Get yourself a copy of either the service manual or an exploded view diagram, either are helpful.

It's been a while, but I don't think I used any special tools, other than the usual bearing pullers, gear pullers, a press, and a bunch of big wire ties.

Where is the best place to get rebuild parts. I pulled mine out of a jyard as a core. It has rust inside from beung wet, but it is mostly surface (on the gears). It needs new bearings and prob. synchros. They said that it was popping out of 1st or 2nd, but I can't tell if any thing is broke. Sorry about jacking the thread.

Seals and syncs are usually on eBay for $100. Check out item #7999161826.
