steering column

Hi folks,
I'm planning to update my 1970 f100 4x4 a bit. It's mostly stock, but I added power steering and brakes a few years ago. Now I'm thinking of adding a tilt tele steering column and changing the PS box to a newer one with a bit more resistance and feel. Right now I have the stock column and a box from a 74 (I think)
Are there any columns that go in easier or fit/look better than others?
Thanks
Martin

Hi Bearmtnmartin,

I don't have any advice for you but would love to hear how your conversion to PB and PS went. I have a 2wd 1970 f-100 I am converting right now.

I have an automatic and need help getting the column out so I can finish installing the PS gear. Can my column be cut to fit or can that only be done to straight shift trucks? I have a line on a column from a 1978 f-150 but the guy has not called me yet and I want a back-up plan.

Thanks for any help.

Since you already have 70's stuff in your truck, you should be able to drop in a tilt column from a 78 or 79 high-option truck (ranger/explorer)

My conversion was a while ago, so my memory is a little rusty. I think your 2wd had ps as an option didn't it? So original parts might be available. My steering column is bottom half original and top half from the 1974. I had to cut off a knuckle and weld a different one on. I seem to remember it was quite straight forward. The box bolted to the outside of the frame, which was simple except I had to make a little threaded plate and slide it inside the double frame for one of the fasteners. The other two just bolted right on.
The only part that gave me grief were the tie rod ends. I used tie rods from both trucks, and I had to spend 3 hours in NAPA looking thru catalogues and opening boxes to find the right ends.(problems with tapers and left hand threads) PS was easy. Just bolt on a booster and hook up a vacuum line.

Ban_four, I converted a C6 2wd years ago with no changes to the steering column. The truck I was working on had a rag joint, I just unbolted it and the box cleared everything. It did not need any modification.

I later went to a later model tilt with cruse control switches built in, and again it just bolted in with no modification required.

I also went to power disk brakes at the same time - if you are not adding disks, make sure you get the proper master cylinder for your drum system. Disk brake ones are different.
