i have a 1979 f250 ranger xlt supercab with a 460. the problem is it only has two wheel drive and i live in michigan. the thing is so long it handles fairly poor when its dry i havent tried the snow yet. so what i want to do is find another on with 4x4 and convert mine. my biggest question is whether or not i need to get it off a supercab because of how long the drivetrain is. a 4x4 regular cab is easy to find cheap but not a 4x4 supercab. another question was how hard itd be. so if you have an answer to any of my questions please email me at st272 at excite.com.
You can find a regular cab, but the frame will not be the right length. A regular cab is 133" and an extended cab short box is 139", the length is added infront of the rear wheels. You can have the frame lengthened, they do it on large trucks all the time. Otherwise you could cut the frames on the 4x4 at a measured length from the rear, and swap them. Then you could put both back together and sell the other to help recoup your expenses. Lots of work, but it can be done. Been researching it myself, I have a regular cab long box 4x4 and want a super. Haven't found a good donor supercab.
i don't think it would be realistic to splice frames together on a 2WD and a 4WD as i think the rails are a different width on those years. i just found a frame and am doing the swap. the hot tip is the F150 4WD frame is the same as the F250 4wd frame on the supercabs. i found an F150 and put all of my F250 stuff on the frame and now have to bolt it all back together. also note that to put 2WD body on a 4WD frame requires additional work due to the narrower frame. hawkrod
