I have a 2005 F-250 with the 6.0, it runs great. However; there are 2 Excursions in town that have a much louder turbo whine. What kind of mods would create such a nice sound?
A 2003 turbo, free flow muffler, and a cat delete pipe (for off road use only, of coarse ) The 2003 turbos had fewer blades in the exhaust turbine making them have more of that jet engine sound. I don't have a muffler but I do have a cat, not load at all but has some bark above 2000 rpm.
i would check ebay for a 2003 (early model) turbo, and check various diesel sites, to see if anyone has upgraded and is selling them. beware it is not cheap. i would run a straight pipe, to see if you like the sound. also, an open element intake would help make the turbo more audible.

I thought that you would also need the turbo pedestal as well to get the right turbo hooked up to it?
i have a 05 i just bought a 03 turbo and you have to change the petstal and then it should bolt on i will be doing the change next weekend i will let you no how it is mark
Take it to the local muffler shop, they charged me $35 to do a muffler delete. Took about 20 min. Picked up 1 mpg on my 03. Have not done it to the 05 yet, only 4000 miles on it.
No, not cause its illegal, but Ford usually won't jack with you about warranty with mods behind the cat. Removing it would surely cause them to try to deny a warranty claim say if at 45,000 the turbo went out.
Mine sounded good, so really didn't see the point in removing the cat. Mine whisled really good, but then again it was a 03.
Where's the best, least expensive way to put a straight pipe on my 6.0?
I am in the process of doing it now on my truck. Just waiting for the UPS man.
I had a muffler delete pipe from a muffler shop welded in but the only problem is it is 3.0 inch pipe and not 3.5 inch pipe. I would think that is better than the stock muffler though.
Go to powerstrokeshop.com and do a search for Ford part #XC3Z5A212EA
That is a muffler inlet extension pipe for a 7.3 PSD but supposedly fits on the 6.0 PSD's. It has the flange and hanger like the cat does and needs to be trimmed to the correct length. That pipe will act as a 3.5 inch cat delete.
Then go over to itpdiesel.com and they have a 3.5 inch muffler delete kit for the 6.0 PSD's.
So $79 for the muffler delete and $67 for the cat delete and you are straight piped for $146 (+shipping) in the stock diameter of 3.5 inches.

I just had my 6.0L 2003 serviced. While talking to the Service Manager he pulled out a newly issued book that showed all the modifications that may/ would void our warrenties. He said the warrentied parts will be void if it was a result of a aftermarket modification. Here are some that I remember: K&N airfilters, air filter systems, propane systems, chips, computers, the cat. removed, and intercoolers. Thats all I can rember for now, but there's alot more. Hope this helps, 79 Bronc.
P.s. I'm in south Fla.
I put the Airaid Intake Kit on my '05 when it was 2 days old. Made the turbo sounds considerably louder. Whistle under boost it quite loud. Someone at work the other night told me they could here me a mile away as I left under full throttle.

Guess you need to re-read my post.
"Would you remove the Cat?"
My response "No, not cause its illegal, but Ford usually won't jack with you about warranty with mods behind the cat."
In conclusion what I told him was leave the cat on and remove the muffler.
Mods behind the cat would be a muffler change, or delete, duals, or even chrome tips. Hope this clarifies for you.
