Is It a Steal

I found a 1964 ford pickup in the local auto swapper. It has a ford 9" rearend, solid body, originaly a texas truck all good glass, parked scince 1989. Its a shortbox and the guy only wants $900 dollars. He says its all there except the engine and tranny. I currently have a 66 pickup and am thinking about swapping the engine out of it because the body is rougher.

If its a very solid body it sounds like a good deal. The 64 is the older style straight front axle while your 66 is a twin I beam, in my opinion a much better suspension. If your 66 is a shorty, the beds will interchange, while the cabs are different enough to not bolt up although anything is possible!

For starters, unless you have a rare twin Ibeam 64, then the 64 is less desirable than the 66 in terms of suspension. The later twin-I setup is much more easily upgraded and handles much better in the original configuration.

Unfortunately, you cannot just take the cab off the 64 and put in on the 66 frame/engine/drivetrain either. 2 wd 61-64 and 65-66 only LOOK the same from the outside. In terms of mechanicals, the 65-66 are more similar to a 67-72 than to a 61-66.

Getting the engine and tranny from you 66 into the 64 is quite do-able. But not a stock swap.

Of course, if the 64 is a lot better, in terms of sheetmetal, AND if you can handle the poorer steering setup, then perhaps its a better deal. I would personally be careful how much I'd pay for a 64 with no engine, UNLESS, it was in really good condition. There are still really nice unrestored 65-66 trucks outs there -- it can cost tons to put in IFS, better brakes in a 61-64, whereas the 65-66 has that stuff already, or requires just a parts swap from a later truck to get there.

Instead of taking the switching the cab is it worth it to mount a new front suspension without too much difficulty and cost just wondering i would love to have the better suspension.but currently i am looking at the amount of work needed to have it ready for my 16th birthday. i am in love with the slick body style.

There are some other recent threads dealing with that and from what I have read, swaping the front suspension is not a simple job to say the least! Good luck!

Friend, A truck that has no engine or tranny wont bring but about $300.00. Things that worked 16 years ago will not now. As posted the cab mounts don't exchange, so how much is the bed worth to you?

I drove my 62 about 300,000 miles in a 10 year period, pulling an camp trailer or a 5th wheel, chasing work. Coast to coast, border to border. Stock single Ibeam. I did put a 390 and 4 speed in it, but that was the only modification. Never have driven a twin Ibeam, so I can't compare the 2, but I didn't have any trouble with the stock setup.

My 64 is getting a Crown Vic chassis, but that's not something for a quick and simple swap, but it should ride nice!

I stay in touch with the Houston area Slick guys on the "other" board. It's probably 3 hour drive, so I haven't gotten down there yet, but I'm planning to get there soon.

thanks everyone for your input i checked out the truck today and found that it is indeed very solid the only spot is in the bed and its a 5"-5" hole no bigge. The engine will bolt in it has newer mounts from previous engine. if anyone else has any suggestions my ears are open. Fordboypete It is missing the engine and transmission that is all. The 64 can be repaired with no problem im saying maybe 30hrs and it would be ready for paint thats with replacing drum brakes with disc renewing all of the brake lines and shocks. I am debating to keep the 66 as a project for my father and I, or sell it if i swap the engine it wont be worth much and i dont want to scrap a classic, when with some TLC it could be a great ride.

Disc brakes are also an issue with the early axle, no direct swap from ford parts, you would have to go aftermarket for that!

Man you gotta admire that 16 year old enthusiasm! I think 900 bucks is way too much. This truck had a non standard engine and transmission that are now gone. Modifications to install an OTF engine have already been made to the frame. These modifications may not be un-doable. 90 percent of the work I do on these old Fords is undoing crappy work done by others. Save your money! If you must have a truck buy a twin I beam, disk brake, fuel tank in the back, 73-79. Drive it! Later buy a 65-66 F100-F250 and after you restore it move the cab and front sheet over to your 73-79 truck. Having a truck is fun and being able to drive it is even funner!

ILOVEMY66, I bought my 66 F100 for $800 in the Dallas area. Nothing wrong with it, new-ish engine, new tires and brakes, new ball joints/kingpins. no big dents, no rust holes anyplace, and a custom cab at that. See the pic in my gallery. These trucks are out there, Some of them nicer than what I got for not much more money. take a drive out into the country and start looking for ranch trucks

$900 for a truck with no motor in Texas is robbery, keep looking on "w w w. cars . com" and "Craigslist", you'll find what you nead in better shape, and cheaper.
