looking at buying a new pickup it will be used to drive to work and pull a camper on some weekends and hunting and other trips seeing what you guys average on the highway empty. and any input on what gears i should go with. i plan on doing a few upgrades exhaust, intake, tuner later on.
tires make a difference... i lost a couple of mpg when i went to "off road" style tires.. more aggressive tread than light truck "stock" style tires.. more rolling resistance = lower mpg... the upside.. this thing is a TANK in the snow..! i could drive this thing through 3 FEET of snow if i wanted..!
Brand new truck or new to you? I assume you're thinking about a 7.3 since you posted it here, but if you're talking brand new I'll move this thread into the 6.0 forum.
If you are considering 3.55 rear end you must be considering an OBS truck. I dont think Ford has offered that rear end since they went to the new body.
i get about 15.9 MPG with the kwik filter, wastegate disable, MBRP 4'' t-b exhaust. im getting a chip at my door next week so after the "newness" wears off and the tires "wear" down, ill report back with mileage
Lots of things contribute. My MPG suffers n ot only because of th 4.10s, but also because of dual rear wheels, crew cab, 4x4, and .....my size-11 right foot!!!

sorry new to me 1999-2001 what ever i can find in my range.
Most trucks in the year group your are considering come with 3.73 rear ends. Unless you are going to use the truck primarily to haul very heavy loads they will do fine.
I think the consideration should be manual or auto tranny?
I agree, I would be more worried about what type of tranny you want, there are pros and cons to both of them, question is, which one will suit your needs the most. I chose an auto based on the fact that I drive it around as a daily driver more than I tow with it. However, when i do tow, I wish I'd gotten a manual 6 speed.
On the MPG poll, I must say that I am on the low side, barely above 15.
I've been getting 16 mpg for the past 50,000 miles (200K total) with the F250 with non limited slip 3.73. The best mileage to date was a couple years ago saw 18-19 mpg a few times.
The Excursion with 3.73 limited slip gets on average 17 mpg or better and has gotten as much as 19-20 mpg on several tank fulls. This vehicle has 148K miles.
i think it will be an auto since the soon to be wife will probably drive it more and she doesn't know how to drive a stick. other wise i would probably get the 6 speed
today i went and looked at a 2000 f-250 diesel lariat excutive series. had the mountings for a 5th plate, brake controller, with 96,000 miles, think they wanted $18,000 or 19,000. looked under the hood checked the oil and it was a little below add and there was oil on the valve covers and oil around the air hose right before the intercoller and on the exit side of the intercooler it was clean. what are our guys thoughts on that.
Dad told me to slow down, after I told him about the 2000 rpm thing. It drastically improved his mileage, so I started testing.
I used to drive 69 mph, with a gps. I would always get 17 mpg. I knew looking at the odometer when to switch tanks, it was so predictable. I now keep it under 2000 rpms after reading some posts here about better mileage at these rpms, and dads experience. I just got 19.5 (there) and 18.9 (coming home) on an 800 mile round trip, with my truck camper. The 17 mpg was empty, just me and my dog on the same route.
My dad and I both have 1995s, his is a four door. He has always gotten good mileage with his 6.9 and 7.3s. This did make a difference. For what it is worth, I use additives, he doesn't, I got very slightly better mileage, but a lighter pickup. His is a 350, mine a 250, but his had the injectors replaced before he got his, mine are original, and I want them to last.
I know this post sounds like I am 19, but I am not. 41 and should know to keep my foot out of the floorboards!
just to give a background.... i get about 17-18 MPG with a 5 speed 4x4 CC/LB PSD (respectively), 4.10 gears, not shifting above 2K, 35" buckshots, 50/50 mix of town and hiway driving, unloaded, with custom intake and very free flow exhaust
