You could easily make something like that work as long as you had a check valve between the tee and the main fuel tank to prevent overfilling.

I had a Transfer Flow Express-UFS 70 gallon tank installed last summer. It automatically pumps into the stock tank when the fuel gauge reads 3/8 of a tank. Pretty expensive, but a 1700 mile or more crusing range is great.
It came in handy when I went to the Gulf Coast last week to get a friend out of Hurricane Katrina's mess. Most stations south of I-20 were closed due to no electricity or no fuel and I just cruised right on by.
