Sorry I haven't been on the site in a while guys. I just got back from Silver Lake Sand Dunes, our group went up there for the Labor Day weekend to do some camping and 4 wheeling. I put my 300 six to work...big time, I pulled out 10 stuck vehicles and towed my buddy's Dodge Ramcharger out of the dunes after he blew his transfer case out. We were hanging out by the mud pits all day Sunday, people were getting stuck in it constantly. I pulled several vehicles out of there, after a while when someone else was tryin to pull them out; you could hear people yelling "get that Red Ford over here, he'll get it out!" I pi$$ed off a couple of these guys I pulled out, once I got them out I kicked my Ford into 4 high/ granny gear and crawled right through the holes they got stuck in! (gotta love rear locker and front LS) On the last day up there I pulled an 04 Chevrolet 1500 Z71 off the top of Test Hill. I got a lot of comments on only having an inline six under the hood. Some guys were completely dumbfounded at the power and low end torque the 300 was displaying when it was pulling stuck vehicles out. Felt good...damn good! There is nothing cooler than pulling someone out of a bog without spinning a tire! Fun time and I had to share it with you guys!
man that kicks a$$, i always love it when some 300 hating peice of crap doubts the inline six and then ends up speechless when they see what it can do. i always find it cool when your pullin' someones broken down truck home and they say "man, though i'd be pulling your truck someday, not mine" and i say, i'm just sorry my truck has the most reliable engine ever made.
I was looking for a post like this to add my latest 300 story too.
A couple days ago, i went over to a fellow ford lover's house to play around with a 5.0 ranger swap and just BS around the garage. well, he needed to move his abandoned project van (1983 E-Van) out of a hole and to the other side of his property, and then drag his 87 GT from that side of the property and into the hole. Both guys that were there were hardcore V8 neanderthals - one with a 460 in the works and the other doing a 5.0 ranger swap. Lets just say that with my 95, 2wd truck - with 2.73 gears and an open diff no less - drug those cars uphill and around turns on dirt, and through the woods without missing a beat. they were thouroughly impressed with my little old 300 - going uphill, pulling that van i swear it sounded like it was turning about 600-700 rpm - but it hummed along without a wimper - i didnt even spin a tire! Overall, i think it was a great testament to the brute pulling power of the 300. I only wish i had a truck identical to mine but with a 5.0 just to see the difference - i know one of those wouldnt take the lugging abuse that i gave my engine!
I'll tell ya what, a buddy of mine had an 82 Bronco with a 2bbl 302/ C6; it ran pretty decent. Actually he would walk all over my 300 on the street, I was quicker off the line but he would slaughter me on top end. But once we got out in the trails that little 302 just couldn't get it, he had to run it in low range for everything other than flat ground. It would just puke out on steep hills in high range, in deep mud he would get stuck because the motor didn't have enough ***** to keep the tires spinning. I realize he did have a bit of a tall gear in it and the motor was not what I would call a strong runner. I like 302s I just think they have no business going in a full size truck...especially a big ol heavy Bronco. I like most of the motors Ford built, but the 300 is my all time favorite. My other friend ( the one whose Ramcharger I towed out of the dunes)...whom is a diehard Mopar guy told me "If I couldn't own a Dodge I wouldn't think twice about going out and buying an old Ford Pickup or Bronco. But I will never own a Chevrolet!" Amen Brother! I like Dodge okay and Chevrolets are okay too...but I bleed Ford Blue! What I absolutely cannot stand is some Bowtie boy who thinks his Z71 is far superior to anything else made in history. It's the attitudes these people have, they talk up the brand they're loyal to, but they don't know anything about their competition! Ur Damn right I'm a Ford guy, but I still check out and research the stuff the other guys are building or have built, it comes in handy when you get in an argument with someone...because you can make em look stupid! The actual truth of the matter, the older Ford and Dodge motors are more durable than GMs. My one friend who is the Mopar guy had a 91 pickup 3/4 ton 4wd with a 318, he was beyond brutal to this truck. He spun 2 rod bearings out of the bottom end, it knocked like crazy! He thrashed that truck brutally with the rods knocking for nearly a year before he decided to park the truck. A guy I used to work with had a late 80s Ford F150 with a 302, which he also used to beat on pretty hard. It had developed quite a bit of bottom end noise, the rear main leak didn't help either. He had to add a quart of oil sometimes two every other day because it leaked so much. His wife had driven the truck for a few days and never added oil as it was needed. The engine ended up seizing on his way to work because it had no oil in it! It most likely would have kept running if it had oil in it, he drove it this way for more than a year before it seized up on him. Now for a GM story...My absolute best friend who I have known all my life is a Chevy guy. He picked up an 86 GMC Suburban with a sweet running 350, he drove it kind of hard but not really. One day he way driving on the expressway and it started rattling really bad. It turned out to be a spun rod bearing, he drove it gentle and always kept oil in it; and it only lasted two months. He was driving along one morning and it just locked right up... tight as a drum. Now I could go on and on for days about this but I think we all know...The Best Never Rest!
Just to add to the story of pulling rigs out. I have an 82 CJ-8 Jeep Scrambler. I put a 94 4.9 EFI in it with a NP435 behind that. This is the best engine swap i have ever done. I would never think about putting in a V-8 after running this motor off-road. I can pull up to a hill in 3rd gear and lug the engine down and then just push on the throttle and away you go. It's has more then enough torque to take you to the top. I have pulled many a rig out of the woods also. It just crawls along a low rpms. No high reving, no heating problems, no any problems. Once, I had the coil go out and didn't have a spare. Another guy pulled me out 5 miles. He had a 4.3 in his rig and it keep over heating. He had to keep the r's up to even keep us moving.
Yea mine did great at the dunes. 4LO 2nd and 3rd was gettin me around w/o a problem. Wasnt a hill that i couldnt make it over, i even made most in 2 wheel. You should have seen the looks i got at the top of test hill, and all the confused looks lol (because it sounds nothin like an 8). Only bad thing is i snapped both my shiftter pins on the top of the trans. That sucked. But it was the most fun ive ever had, if you havent been there go for it.
since my 95 f150 300 burnt my house down i have been a dodge man, but there will always be a special place for that good ol reliable 300. Anything but a Chevy.
was up wheeling in the snow 2 winters ago, i was pushing powder up over the hood and the 300 pushes throught he snow without any problem what so ever. with 31 inch tires on a stock 86 4x4 my truck sits pretty high for a stocker. Well anyways, i come accross a 95-98 chev stuck halfway up to the window in snow, high centered on his droopy chevy frame. The problem i was having was that he was stuck facing me, blcoking the whole road. i asked if he wanted help, he said no he could get out and didn;t want to be towed by a ford. So i waited a while and finally said let me pull you. he said ok. So we dug down under both trucks and tied chains to his tow hook and to my frame. kicked it in 4wd (yes i was running in 2wd this entire time) high range and put it in reverse (t-18 with 3.55's) and tugged him out just so he could get himself stuck again. it was funny, the only time he could move was when i was towing him. I ended up towing him in reverse for nearly a mile until he got out of hte blown in area and into my tracks.and then he was like "man that ting tows great, what do you have in there" i said "i got a 300 straight six man" his jaw just dropped and then he thinks for a while and says "how are we gonna get around each other" so i got back in, fired my truck up again and drove up the bank, though the powder, and back onto the road behind him. And he was thinking he was cool with his big ole 454 and stomped the gas to take off and dug in again. So i had to hook up to him agian and pull him out agian. hahha it was great fun. i saw the same guy athte gas station like a week later and he said he never knew a six cylinder could pull a truck as heavy as his through snow like that.
awsome, yea my 85' is awsome in the snow with 4.10's and locked at both ends.
Most people around here know that i'm a total gear head and know too much about semi trucks, so they usually admit my truck will pull better if i say it does.
These things are great even stock off road, why is it every chevy has that droopin frame? Wouldn't you think they would of learned by now??
I like the way my frame is tucked up gives me more clearance.
When a 100 year old oak tree fell in our back yard about a year ago.
We left it there till we went to put a fence up.
So i moved it into the field, my neighbor said i'd need a dozer to move it.
After me and my dad got it hooked right, tried a couple places, i put her in 4lo 2nd(i have a granny box) walked off the clutch and it pulled that thing up hill with out loosing traction, and hardly any pedal.
I was so proud. That 300 is a monster.
Wish i would of gotten a picture. Still no clue how much it weighed.
we measured the trunk at around 4ft across( not around) and it was probally 60ft tall.
How much do you think that weighed?? 4-5k????? It was a huge tree
thats a big tree, problem more than 5,000 pounds. But i love my 300, the best part about my truck is that you can go 50 mph on any grade dang near...whether loaded, really loaded, or OMG wheres your springs loaded.
