rear axle siezed?

I'm trying to pull out my rear left axle out of my '73 F-100 lwb,2wd.
I'm thinking my axle bearing is busted. I cannot get it off. I've got everything apart down to actually pulling the flange and axle out but it just won't budge. What should I do? My truck is stuck in another town and don't have $$$ for tow charge. Need your help fellas, it's my ride to work. Thanks.

Take the brake drum and put it on backwards. Start three lug nuts on the studs, but don't tighten them. Grab the drum and use it like a slide hammer to work the axle out of the housing.

Sounds like a great idea! Might I damage the threads on my studs? What's a "slide hammer"?

A slide hammer is a rod with a piece of metal that slides back and forth. A dent puller uses one for pulling out dents, uses a screw in the sheet metal. I made a plate with 3 holes that fit over the wheel studs. I made an adapter for the slid hammer in the center. Bolt it on and a few blows will get the axle out. Have not needed it very often. The axles usually will pop out by hand.

If the axle shafts are stuck in the housings it is usually the bearings rusted in the ends of the axle tubes and yes sometimes you need a slide hammer. I was working with my buddy on his parents Jeep cherokee and its got the same bearing set up like a Ford and they were seized into the housing. We got a slide hammer with a 6 pound hammer on the guide rod we damn near pulled the Jeep right off the jack stands from slamming the hammer. When it did let go the axle shaft came flying out and the end of the slide hammer punched through the plywood on the shop wall

You are gonna have to take the axle shafts to a shop and get the old bearings pressed off and the new ones pressed on you can't do it by hand.

if you have a long dowel or a long peice of 1" round rod you can use that to shove it out from the other side, but that means removing the other axel. it worked for me. mudder trucker.
