I cant believe what a difference a new fuel filter can make, idle comes down nicely and accelleration is more refine. I could hardly breath through the old filter, it was pretty clogged. What is the proper change interval for fuel filters by the way?
filter is on the framr rail under drivers seat. the fuel line has snap on plastic ends that press onto the new filter inlet and outlet. it has sheetmetal ears inside. if you pry it off, it will work, but the ears are used as retainers. you get the plastic sleeve at Auto Zone, slip over the line and push the sheetmetal ears out of the way as you slide the filter out. Same setup used on the new air conditioner ends, etc.
What I mean is, what is the purpose of the tool? What special bracket or what not needs to be removed with it? From my understanding the only thing holding these filters on are plastic clips, which I was provided with on the new filter.
The tool releases the clips from the filter. The clips are in the lines and snap over a barb on the filter. The tool pushes into the fitting to release the clip from the barb so that the line can be pulled off.
also the clips are part of the lines so if you break them you have to buy a whole new line which is over 200.00 . don't try to use something else to remove them.
yes there are 2 types,,,the "older" type with EXTERNAL visable plastic clips you just pull out with pliers. and a new filter should come with new ones. I think there color coded for 5/16 and 3/8 line size. The "newer" style , not sure what yr but my '01 has it, doesnot use the plastic clips , you have to buy the special insertion "tool" that releases the internal metal clips, as someone has mentioned. In my opinion, the older style worked just fine. of course ford has brighter idea.....paul
First disconnect the neg battery post, then unscrew the schrader valve located on top of the feul rail on passenger side of engine. Make sure you have a rag to soak up the feul that will leak out so it does not spill down into a sparkplug hole. I also recommend an old coffee can to catch any feul that will run out from the feul filter when you disconnect it from the feul lines. I never lost any feul from the tank line, but gravity pushed most of the feul from the engine line, all together I lost about 1/2 cup full, not a whole lot I dont think.
heres a picture of what the tool looks like. This one is the high dollar one. Its a red coated 5/16 . This is the one i use to remove my fuel filter on a 97 F150 4x4 flareside 4.6
