With the potential of my tranny taking a digger on me in the somewhat near future.....I would like to try to put a manual in.
Are there any procedures and lists of what all parts I am going to need to come up with floating around out there? Also, what kind of tranny should I get?
I am new to the ford truck arena and do not know anything about what is out there in the manual tranny arena. I have a 77 2wd supercab with a C6/460.
Well, iam not sure too much on retrofitting to a manual. There are a few items to consider. One of which is the pedal assembly and linkages. I have seen many more conversions to auto trannies from manual. Dont discount that C6. It a very strong unit. Any good tranny shop can go through it and taylor it to your needs. Unless your rock crawling and in need of granny low, the C6 will do many jobs.
if you want to swap to a manual tranny, here is a list of what you will need. pedal assembly out of a 73-79 standard shift pickup, all the clutch linkage from the same truck, bellhousing to fit your motor, flywheel to fit your motor, with clutch and pressure plate, manual trans, best is the new process or borg warner 4 spds, front drive shaft for a manual trans. not a long list, but long enough. i think that is everything, if not someone will chime in i am sure.
Swaps like this generally require a "donor" truck for all of those little pieces.
Unless you are like me and have a buddy that wants my T-18 for his Bronco and I want his C6 :-) We just swap everything back and forth. The only problem pieces are the tailshafts.
to go cheap you can use a 360/390 flywheel and clutch. it will fit and balance right and everything from what i have heard. many people have done it and have had no problems. you're 460 must 78 or older though.
