I have a 76 highboy with a c6 from a 73 lincoln. The tailshaft housing on the transmission doesn't have the mount for the 4x4 shifter, so I'm attempting to change the housing and shaft, based on advice from guys on this site.
The problem I have: taking the housing from the donor transmission was no problem - the output shaft came out with the housing. However, on the other transmission (currently in the truck) the shaft won't come free. Can anyone tell me how to release the output shaft from the transmission? I hope I'm not looking at a major disassembly, because I'm already deeper into the trans than I would like to be...
The output shaft is the last thing you take out of a C6. You have to disassemble the whole thing. If the other one came out it had a problem, the Snap Ring that holds it in came off.
I swapped output shafts when I put my new tranny in and I'd never been in an automatic transmission before. The task scared me a bit and was more than I was comfortable with but it really was not bad at all if you take your time. As subford said it's the last think you can pull from a C6 so you would have to remove the valve body, the band, remove the pump, forward clutch assembly, all your gears, etc and then a snap ring to get the output shaft out. You don't have to be an expert to do it but you do need a clean space to work on and an eye for detail to make sure you re-assemble it all correctly. I tore apart my old C6 first to pull the shaft and get an idea of how they're assembled before I got into the new one.
All that being said, you can make a shifter support off of your crossmember and then you won't have to worry about the tailshaft housing with the bolt hole in it.
