I just wanted to tell you guys to take time to do all saftey precautions.I wired wheeled my frame for two days last week getting ready for paint.Used safety glasses the entire time.On Saturday before paint I saw a small spot that I missed.Being in a hurry I grabbed the grinder and no safety glasses.Well you can probably guess what happened.I just got home from the eye specialist that had to grind the metal out because it was embedded so deep.I was very lucky I did not loose my sight.Just wanted to give you guys a heads up on what could happen when getting in a hurry.
Sorry to hear of your troubles but at least there is the silver lining that you will be ok. As the Chairman of the "I Can't Believe You Did That" club I welcome you as a new member!
Thanks for the tip, what a great reminder about taking shortcuts. Another thing to beware of when doing heavy grinding is the buildup of particles above the glasses, on the eyebrows, etc. I've seen lots of incidents of people actually rubbing the particles in their eyes after the work had been completed.
I tempted fate for years and have been way too lucky for way too long, now I wear eye protection. For the last several years I have been gainfully employed as a safety guy (I was even an OSHA compliane officer for a time) so Now I have to set a good example, especially when my younguns are helping.
Thanks again for the reminder and I'm glad you still have your eyes
just tonight I was reading a thread on the dangers of welding/buring galvanized material and drilled down thru some comments to find an article written by the late Jim "PAWPAW" Wilson...Jim's death was a direct result of zinc fume poisoning from burning galv material.....the sad part... he knew better. He was a regular contributor to many welding/forge forums, an accomplished writer and published author... here's a first hand account of what a wire wheel in a grinder can do EVEN WITH proper safety gear... I work in a steel mill and PPE is required and any disregard for safety is dealt with severely...up to and including termination... Safety gear is cheap and not that intrusive to work.... just do it, OK ??? !!!, glad you're ok Wayne !
My brother did the same thing only a wire bullseyed him right in the pupil causing an opaque cataract. After 3 operations his sight in that eye has been improved from legally blind into the barely correctable range. You were very lucky. I wear a full faceshield when doing any grinding or cutoff wheel work, I have had 3 cutoff wheels explode so far, and several cutoff pieces rocket 10-15' away.
How much is a few extra minutes worth?
