1st Oil Change. Problem??

Just performed my first oil change at 20000, as per the great directions on this site. Everything went fast and filled with around 13 1/2q of Rottela 15-40. It's what the guy I bought it from had always used.
That was Sunday, now everytime I start the truck in the morning, when cold, it starts fine but after a couple of seconds the truck starts to shake and it sounds like its misfiring and clouds of white smoke come from the exhaust. This goes on for around 30 seconds and then everything is fine.
Is this problem related to the oil change or something completly different.
The engine and exhaust are stock!!

Just wanted to say after rereading my post that that wasn't the first oil change for the truck, just the first I had performed since owning it.

Also, just remembed I filled up the tank the same day from a station I had never used before, could it be fuel related?
Just trying to give you all the info!!

Cheers,
BB

I would tend to suspect the fuel more than the oil change based on the information you provided. I just wonder why it clears up after 30 seconds. I assume you changed the oil filter also? where is the oil level showing on your dipstick?

Have the dealer check for engine codes. EGR-Injector-Exhaust Back pressure sensor can cause this. If you put the drain plug back in the oil pan I would not say oil related.

Now that made me laugh, I was nervous as this was my first oil change to I checked the plug twice to make sure it was in. It's going back to Ford for the recall on the wiring harness so I will have them check the codes.

I did change the filter and it reads 3/4's on the dipstick!!

Thanks for the quick answers guys. I have a trip up to PA now so will have to fill up again, so I can see if it was the fuel.

Cheers,
BB

Changing oil makes you nervous? The fuel filters will leave you numb then...

Hopefully you changed the oil filter cap "O" ring as well. Check for leaks in the area were the "O" ring seats. Good luck.

When I changed my oil, about 700 miles ago, I checked the O ring and it looked in perfect health. Think I changed it with the new one, but can not remember. As long as it is not leaking does it really matter?

I suppose it could still suck air w/o leaking. Maybe?

My truck always does that in my driveway backing up a hill. Talking with a friends dad who is a Sr. Master Technican from ford he says that since the diesel work of the heat that when everything is cool inside that the pump take a bit longer to build pressure. That along with the enigne being cold causes the poor performance. Mine only does it when going up the hill in the driveway. Your situtation may be different.

My truck does the same thing but al the time. I took it back to the dealer and they coulnt find anything wrong with it. It has doen it since the day I picked it up. The tech at ford said it was normal due to the engine being cold. It does it more often when temps drop. Mine however doesnt smoke at all.

It was my first time!!
I will do better next time!!
So you are saying I shouldn't attempt changing the fuel filters without the aid of a safety net??
Is it that bad?? It was going to be my next project.
When do they need to be replaced??

Cheers,
BB

It came with the filter, so I changed it as well.

The information I have read states that the oil filter housing o-ring must be replaced when the cap is removed. Something to do with expansion from heat or something, and it won't seal properly again. Also, did you try draining your HFCM. I got a water in fuel light once and mine ran rough at start up. Drained the module and it never happened again. Now I drain it every 5,000 when I change the oil as part of routine maintenance. May be overkill, but can't hurt anything.

Yes, I had drained it a couple of days previously as the light came on. It has got a lot better on morning starts, no shaking and just a little smoke that clears up after a couple of seconds. I can only think that it must of been some bad diesel

I would suspect it was the fuel you got. I've put about 7000 miles on my truck all over the country since buying it new in June. The biggest factor in driveability I have noticed is the brand of Diesel I get. So far, Sunoco is by far the best. A tank full of Sunoco in Ohio and I got 19.8 mpg on it driving all highway 70-75 mph and the truck felt like it had a performance chip in it. Phillips is pretty good second. About 18.5 mpg highway @ 70 mph and best city mpg @ 14. Trucks seems to run smooth and feel pretty peppy on it. I live in New Mexico so no Sunoco to test for city use. Truck stop Diesel all about the same middle of the pack results for Love's, Flying J, etc... Diamond Shamrock Diesel sucks. It's cheap when the prices are high, but I get about 12 MPG city and 15 highway with it. Truck runs rough and feels weak on it too.

I saw no difference in Performance or MPG by adding an Airaid intake or changing to Amsoil Oil.

EGR disconnect got me about .5 MPG in city and 1.5 on highway, Oilguard bypass filter kept my oil cleaner much longer than first oil was, but still waiting on results from 1st sampling to see how it is holding up.
