Hello: I just got the wife a new 4wd 3.0 mercury mariner. Last night I noticed a little oil underneath the vehicle. I dropped the vehicle off at the dealer this morning. This afternoon I got a call from the service manager and he says that the engine is leaking from atleast three different places. He says that this is not right for a vehicle that only has 600 miles on it. He says that he called Ford and got the ok for them to replace the whole engine and that one is being sent from the factory. I let him know that I thought that this was better than fixing it but thought that they should buy the vehicle back. He said he would call Ford on this.
My questions is: Do I have a leg to stand on? I do think that it is B.S. that a vehicle with 600 miles needs a new engine, but in a way am very happy that the dealer decided to get a replacement engine instead of replaceing the seals. Just was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and what happened. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Usually there needs to be multiple repairs for the same thing before the dealer would by back a vehicle. It is always a last resort. It's a good deal to get a new engine before there ever tried to fix it.
I've never heard of the 3.0 V6 having that bad of an oil leak in the Escape/Tribute/Mariner. Sounds like something is missing a gasket or the bolts weren't torqued. Actually, they probably went beyond what they "had to" by replacing the engine since there isn't any proven engine damage yet. Now after saying that as a third party...if it happened to me at 600 miles, I'd be about ready to crawl all over someone as to why they don't replace the entire vehicle. Replacing the vehicle would show good will but read about the rotors and CD4E tranny issues and you'll understand their opinion on good will.
Not to scare you since I can point out a potential problem part on any new vehicle I've owned whether it's Ford, Honda, Chevy, Nissan or Toy. I'm on my second Escape so that must say something for them...
thanks for the replies. I was definately thinking that the dealer was going above and beyond the call of duty. The thing that really bumbs me out is that this is my wifes first new vehicle and first Ford (she grew up in a GM family). So here she is with her first new vehicle and it getting a new motor at 600 miles.....that sucks....can't wait till the next family get together...should be fun. Thanks.
