speedometer and shifting problem

I have a 1991 e150 van and the tranny is shifting whenever it wants to an it shifts hard too. I picked up another tranny out of a 1992 e250 and installed it in my "91" . Now I have the same problem. This one shifts hard and whenever it wants to and now I have no speedometer and the "rear antilock" light is on and stays on. I replaced the part that 2 wires plug into that is on my tranny where the speedometer cable goes in and still same problem. Any answers would be appreciated. thanks

First we need to know which transmission you have. Is it an overdrive unit? Does it have an "overdrive" button on either the shifter or on the dash?

Is the check engine light on? Did you have it scanned to read the codes?

Most likely, you have a speed sensor issue, but only if its an electronic unit.

Could the throttle position sensor be a factor?

Yes, but that's why we need to know which transmission and it needs to be scanned. Until we know these things we are only guessing.

It is a overdrive with the button on dash and the check engine light goes off after I start it.

OK, so you have an electronic unit, most likely an E4OD. If the speedo doesn't work and it shifts hard it does sound like a speed sensor issue. Can I assume that the original transmission had a speed sensor mounted in the tailshaft housing? I think '92s had the speed sensor mounted in the rear end housing. If so the transmission that you took fromt he '92 may not have a pickup on the output shaft for the sensor to read there.

You really need to have it scanned and may need to have a technician drive it with a scanner on it so see if the computer is getting the speed sensor data.

If you're ABS light is on, the sensor in the rear end is bad. This also controls the speedo, which then in turn controls the transmission. I feel you replaced a $1300 (rebuilt, not sure of a JY unit) because a $20 part is bad.
