I'm back. I wrote awhile back about my faulty engine. I have a 351W in my 79 F250. It has Mallory HYFIRE Ignition system on it. I have had problems with the truck running good and then losing all power to the point of the engine stopping. When I hit the gas nothing happens. I ended up advancing the timing almost a 1/2 turn of the distributor last night. It ran good for about 3 minutes and then lost power to just a creep. It kept backfiring out of the exhaust and carb. I ended up having a slight fire on the carb. because of it. Can anyone help? I know I have low compression on the number 1&3 cylinders.
Mud,
You've got two problems.
1. One is timing. Set your timing correctly and try leaning your carb down.
2. Often when a vehicle runs rich, it will start fine but, after it gets up to temp, the rich mixture fouls the motor. By advancing the timing your giving the motor more time to flash off the excess fuel. But this builds more compression and by the time it come up to temp the motor starts to run backwards. This in turns, makes for quite a show, especially if you've got the air cleaner off.
I hope you don't have a Holley, they don't respond well to flaming backfires.

is the converter clogging up? this will cause alot of back pressure and as it runs for a few minutes, the build up of pressure will choke the motor down and eventually blow the rings out of it.
