Lightning CHMSL Fit on Excursion?

The Lightnings (later) came with a LED center high mount sopt light that also houses a pair of bed lights.

I seem to remember hearing that these would bolt onto an Excursion, but that you would have to do some wiring to make it all work. (Understandable)

I have searched...does anyone know if these indeed fit or look right. I think the Lightning part is black as opposed to all red like the factory.

I put one on mine. Piece o' cake. The light's plug fits the Excursion receptacle, except the X has only 2 wires connected. The 3rd (center) wire on the Lightning light fixture can be easily connected to the aft-most interior dome light (like I did), or to the reverse lights (which is how I'm going to change mine). Those cargo lights put out a fair amount of light.

cficare...thanks.

After posting earlier...I saw an older F-150 (same era as the Lightning) that had a CHMSL with tow clear lenses on the sides for the bed lights. Might even look better as it is all lense...not a black plastic piece. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the tip about wiring.

We're talking about the 3rd brakelight at the top rear of the X. Some model year F150s are somewhat interchangeable ... not an exact fit, but good enough. The F150 Lightning had an LED 3rd brakelight with a bug-eye cargo light on each side ... about $90 to $100 on eBay. Landyot has some photos of his in his online album over at FordExcursions.com

Karkraft has the LED ones for around $70, I think.

I took my Ex's off today and will drop by the dealer and see how the fit will be. They have an F150 part in stock (without cargo lights). If this will fit well, I am looking to get the one from a up to '04 F-150. I saw a couple on trucks yesterday and they are all lense, with two clear lenses on the edges. That way, it will look more factory (IMHO) than the Lightning ones that have the black plastic surround.

It looks great! Also check out how LANDYOT put the V-10 badge above Excursion. Nice, real nice!
I also like his rear spoiler, it goes well together. I bet it keeps the dust off the back door, but I wonder if it cuts down on the mileage?

I was the dealer yesterday and compared the standard F150 light with cargo lamps to the Excursion's. I stood in the bed of the F-150 and compared the unit I removed from my Ex.

The Ex's is wider, and has a differetnt shape than the F-150 that is square on the ends. I decided against this as it will not fit as well as I would like it to. It will bolt in...and even the Ex housing carries an F-150 prefix on the number...but the lense is different enough for me to pass.

Hey 'ol Chap - The air-deflector and 3rd brakelight are all Ford parts.

Matt M.

it was not made clear what year F150's they were talking about:

97-03 F150 has interchangable mounting hi-mount third brake light lens as do 00-05 Excursion.

04-06 F150 do NOT interchange with Excursion.

It was the earlier ones I compared. They may bolt up, but the shape is different and it won;t fit as well as the Excursion factory part. The taper is different, and it won;t fit snug along the tailgate of teh Ex.

Here is mine on my Excursion, But there are some issues such as triming 2 little studs on the back of the brake light housing, the cornors of the housing bearly fit.. There are also gaps on the sides but its not that noticeable. It did take me a while to stop looking at those gaps.

I still havent connected the cargo lamps... Just been lazy.

Looks good. I wired the cargo lights on mine to the interior light circuit, but will soon change that so they illuminate with my reverse lights instead.
