Problem with the Passenger's Door

I have a 79 F250 that I am restoring. I replaced the door weather stripping and now the passenger door doesn't latch unless I really slam it. I used the factory weatherstripping and the door closed fine before I put the new weather stripping on. The door closes fine without any weather stripping bur obviosly it isn't tight. In an attempt to fix it, I have replaced the latching mechanism with new from Ford, removed & reinstalled the weather stripping, tried to adjust the door at the hinges but nothing seems to work. It feels like it is binding on the weather stripping at the front of the door when I close it slowly but I can not see where it is.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help,

Earl

I think that's kind of "normal". happened to me anyway. After they've been closed for a while they shut easier but may take a month or longer.

Problem with the Passenger's Door

Earl,
Do not beat anything with a hammer yet.
If you wait the weather stripping will crush down and everything will be just fine.

I use 3M black weather-stripping adhesive avaiable at parts stores.
In Canada they market it in a box, and you will find it in the trim section.

Problem with the Passenger's Door

I used the 3M yellow adhesive, the rubber sticks fine. I just finished installing a new carpet and after I reinstalled the two aluminum pieces of trim that finish the carpet at the door & it closed better.

As a side, I've found Mother's Billet Mag cleaner to really work. I have the two aluminum pieces shining like new (except for the little dings that come from being on the truck for over 20 years.

Thanks for all the help!

Earl

hey guys thanks for the help w/ the 3M adhesive. did/do you use any special fastener to hold the corners in place while it dries? i have the rubber in the door now held in place with vise grips in the corners, just wanted to know if you knew of a better way.
Thanks again!

First of all, make sure the surface is absolutely clean under the weatherstrip. I use C-clamps, vise grips and strips of wood to clamp. After you have the weatherstipping glued on with either type of 3M adhesive and it is all set and cured, clean the mating surface where the weatherstrip meets the body. When everything is clean and dry spray the gasket and the mating surface with silicone spray. This helps the rubber slide at the front of the door and also keeps the door from freezing shut in the winter. You may have to adjust the striker bolt (with a torx wrench not a hammer) and even the hinges to re-align the door with the truck surface if it has been adjusted in the past. Also check for worn hinges and replace if required.

Eric - thanks for the advice. Another question - do you guys use any adhesive under your carpet. i've read your suppose to use some spray adhesive to help hold it in place. this is the first time i put new carpet in and have seen any adhesive on factory carpets.

Thanks again to everybody.

I use spray adhesive sparingly in a select few areas to keep the carpet from shifting around. You certainly don't want adhesive all over. As usual get everything clean :-) Also get some sound deadening and heat insulation. Spot it all together with the spray adhesive. Factory carpets may have a little old adhesive you didn't even notice. Also the factory OEM carpet is molded to fit better than the aftermarket stuff.

Dennis- thanks for always responding & helping me w/my questions. now two more:
you mean start a central piece of the gasket in a corner, not start the end of the gasket there? should i also trim the gasket and have the two ends meet somewhere under the sill plate?
