I own a 1984 f150 300 1-bbl w/ 4spd, 2wd. I had been having what i can only describe as vapor lock issues. The truck would stop running or even not start if too hot. I died ont eh way home one monday night and would not start at all.
I have spent my evenings the last two weeks working on the problem. I figured it was my fuel pump giving up the ghost, so I put in a new electric pump, glass filter. and replumbed it. It still didn't work, so went about retesting all of my electrical components for spark. it turned out to be a fryed ignition pickup (gut to my distributor). Then i went through two of those to find some bad wires (bare).
She rolling now though, still a little rough, but moving.
I hope this saves somebody somewhere the kind of head ache I had.
Thanks for the info. It may come in handy for someone down the line. Actually had the same problem on my 92 and after many parts and troubleshooting it turned out to be the pick up sensor in the distributor. By the way in the Chilton manuals it doesn't even mention that in the troubleshooting area.
It seems that my F-150 masks most of my electrical issues as fuel\air issues as well..The symptoms would indicate rich or lean conditions, but then I find out it's a loose connector, or whipped ign coil.....
Thanks for the input, this helps and also confirms my suspicions.....
Still having a hickup in the fuel system. I mentioned my new electric pump, rerouted lines and my glass filter. Most of the time the filter is full (you can see it). But occasionaly, shortly after the start up you give it gas to shift gears but they rpms drop. i checked the filter, all most empty. It was sucking air when i hit the throttle. I thought that by now I would have all the air out of the lines. perhaps I need to fine tune the routing to get rid of the roller-coaster-like path?
Any suggestions?
Wondering if your float is stuck...It sounds as though your your float is stuck closed....Maybe time for a thorough carb cleaning?? It just seems like fuel is avaialble, just not reaching where it needs to......
