What can i check myself to look for exhaust leaks? When i have my AC on (NOT RECIRC MODE) i get fumes inside the truck. But if you are sitting for a few mins, it quits doing it. I am not convinced it is actually a problem with a leak, but i want to check first. There are no 'hisses'.
I was having the same problem with my '04 ('03 build). I had it in the dealer for power loss problems and the tech showed me a leak. He wasn't originally looking for it and only found it because of the soot build up on the fire wall. It is in the shop right now having the inlet pipe to the turbo replaced. Had the turbo replaced a few weeks ago and apparently they say it wasn't installed properly.
I looked in my engine compartment. Didnt find any soot. Looked at the manifold. Aside from copious amounts of rust (crystals) on the manifold, it looks like the factory paint is burning off evenly.
I had the same smell in my 04. I took it to the dealer and they found a crack Y-Pipe. They told me that it was a safety issue, because not only was I smelling exhaust, but I was getting CO in the cab. The smell is because the Y pipe is close to the fresh air intake. If you put your AC in recirc you won't smell it.
its an 05. If you open the hood and stick your nose in there you will smell no exhaust. Its very odd. Sometimes its does it, sometimes not. I dont think its a problem.
My 04 is in the dealer now for a bad Y-pipe. The dealer found it as it was in for other repairs. Suppose to be a common problem on the 6.0L according to the dealer.
