well i was taking off my dash to checj the bulbs on my 1960 f350 and i pulled it out set it down and i heard crakling and the blue smoke of death uh it fried the voltage regulator and replaced with another one off a 57-60 dash i had laying around it doesnt seem to work right im not a 100% sure what else could it have done
Most likely U have overstressed the gauges and there most likly will never read the same agien.. Or you have another short someplace else in the harness....
Time for a massive overhaul of the wiring system. Be glad it happened at home and not on the way somewhere. Don't need a fire in the truck, definitely ruins one's day........
I've also had the (oh duh) moment in the truck..I forgot to disconnect the batt before tinkerin'. I think the guage panel grounds thru the dash when connected ( not a100% sure) I traced down all the wires...nothing seemed burned up, although still have no dash lights ( but the guages work!!) I had to replace a couple fuses (7 or 9amp I think) in the headlight switch before everything seemed somewhat normal.. I hope this helps!!

Once you let the blue smoke out that they inject into the new wires, you need to redo stuff. I'm with the guys on a major overhaul. You never know where else you've weakened a connection or "just about" burned through the insulation on a wire.
the truck i now own came from baja mexico and i too had a blue smoke incident today. turns out the guy had way too many wires hooked onto the ignition switch, some that went nowhere and others that went to things that no longer work. anyhow, i touched the cigarette lighter somebody had put in and just about lost the truck. fried a bunch of wires, but gave me a reason to do some ripping out.
well not to shoot you all out of the sky but it was my voltage regulator (was fried inside it needs to be gounded to work properly i scrwed in another one to the dash and all the guages work right agian and i replaced all the burnt out bulbs and theres nothing wrong uner the dash only thing as far as wiring dont work is the brake lights but that may be something else but its dark and im done working
Did the smoke come from the voltage regulator or from wiring insulation under the dash? Is the voltage regulator on your truck under the dash? I have not seen that. My trucks have all had them mounted on the outside of the firewall.
I'd sure like to go to the factory and see how they inject the smoke into the wires and other components. Theys sure seem to pack a bunch of it in there! I don't know about the rest of you but no matter how hard I try I've never, ever been able to get any amount of smoke back in
the voltage regulator is on the under side of the back guage cluster its in a prfect place where you can pull the the dash out fry your wiring and really ruin the next month
