Help- Rearend choice
71 F100, 87 CrownVic 5.0, AOD Trans, 31" dia tires and 27" dia tires, about a 3.5 rear. Engine lugs down bad @ 35- 40 in 3rd, and 50 or so in OD. Some one posted a formula for ratios before, I wrote it down and can't find it. Would appreciate any input, except I should be more organized and not lose stuff!!Thanx guys and girls.

Mouse, Try this out. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm . It was sent to me to help me with a gearing problem. I think you can find the whole thred here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=317892 . Everyone was incredibly helpful in selecting gears. It seems like you might want shorter tires or lower gears. I'm running 30's with 3.73's and am very happy with them.

With the OD and 31s you can obviously get away with some more gear out back. If you're going for the best mileage, then your 3.55s are probably a good choice with A0D. If you want some more pep, look at some 3.73s or 4.10s.
