I'm gathering the parts to convert over to power windows and locks on my 73 F250. I've got the lock motors and just pulled a power window switch that controls 4 windows from a 80's Ford midsize pass car (maybe Taurus)
the switch has 4 rockers that are three positions each, up, down, middle. Each switch is closed in the normal (middle) position and then open (not conducting) when pressed. It uses a common wire that connects to each switch and conducts until you press the switch either up or down.
The question is how do you wire a switch that is normally closed and then open when you press it? This seems backwards from a normal switch that conducts when you press it. Is there some relay or something that will reverse the process or how do you use a switch like this?
I'm hoping for a cheap solution so I can use this switch, thanks KarlJay.
I can't help you with this question, but the new door shells I've ordered for Harrison are going to have the handles shaved and electric windows installed (by me)...all from an entire kit, which will have all the needed parts in it.... (hopefully)...
I'd like some info on that power window kit. It's a real pain crawling across the seat to roll down the passenger window. Where did you get it? Was it very costly?
I don't have the kit, yet...it's one of those $250.00 jobber-do's available in most of the custom trucking magazines...along with the fancy-schmancy electric door poppers...
Once the replacement door shells come in in a few weeks, then I'll have to save up for a few weeks to buy the window kit. I'll post pictures on my web site when they come in...
If you want to use the scrapyard pieces you will need the schematic for the car you are getting them from. You should also get the wiring harness and the relays involved from the donor vehicle.
You might find it is easier to mount and work with a setup from a 80's van. Grab the whole harness, switches, relays, and all. They are for a two window system.
That system is what I will be using for my 78F250.
Another modification that is handy, if you don't have to worry about small kids, is to wire the system always hot so you don't need the key to run the windows. You could always put a hot/disable switch under the dash etc. also.
