At what point do you need to consider upgrading to a d70? I have d60 with 16 spline axle. I was thinking about installing 30 spline and a ARB. Should I spend more money and get the d70 with 35 spline and a ARB. I have a 73 hyboy with 35 inch tires.
Normall I'd say "When you start breaking axles, then it's time to upgrade." But if you're already doing the upgrade from a 16 spline shaft I would go ahead and put a D70 axle in if you can find one. I don't know how things are in your area but around here they can be found for $100, complete. Try looking in late 70's vans if you're not able to find an F350 with one. Upgrading from a 16 spline D60 axle to a 30 spline axle is not going to give you much of a strength increase.
One thing to remember, especially if you pull it fro a van is that you may have to move the spring perches to make it fit your truck. Don't let this scare you, it's easy to do. They will come off with a little help from an angle grinder and a BFH. If you have a good 220v welder you can put them on yourself but if not it shouldn't cost more than $20 to have a shop weld them back on.
