D60 vs D70 rear ends:

I was hauling a 10' '76 Wilderness camper (3000lbs wet) and just upgraded to a 2004 10' Artic Fox camper (3300 lbs wet).

I have a '78 F250 4x4 Supercab with 460, C6, NP205, D44 front, D60 rear, 4.10s, 3400lb rated toyo tires & airbags.

What did the camper specials come with for rear ends? A D70? How much more carrying capacity does a D70 have vs a D60?

I'm not worried about spring capacity or frame strength. The frames between the 3/4 ton & 1 ton are very similar.

Ryan.

My truck is a camper special and came with a D60 rear end. I don't know the strength comparrisons in terms of how much weight one can handle vs the other but the shafts on the D70 are significantly larger than the D60 and the tube is 3.5" vs 3", plus a much thicker wall.

Did the D70's come in the F350's? And did they only come in dual wheel configurations? Also aren't the studs 9/16 vs 1/2?

Dana 70's did come in F350's. You should'nt need to worry at all about pulling that camper, the Dana60 will definatly be able to handle a 3300lb trailer.

I don't remember ever seeing a single wheel D70 for sale locally - though I havn't combed the wrecking yards for them (local yards are very expensive). I have been watching for a couple of years now. May have to go with a Sterling.

Sterlings do tend to be more common but the D70's should not be too tough to find. I looked for several months here because I wanted a 70U with the smooth bottom. I couldn't find one so I finally just went and pulled a regular 70 out of a van. It will largely depend on you year of vehicles you're looking at, whether you get a 70 or Sterling.

The reason I'm worried is I'll be hauling a 3300lb camper then pulling my early bronco on a trailer. So I'd imagine the trailer would have about 500 - 700 lbs of tongue weight. I'll be using a weight distributing hitch so that my help.

Are the spring perch dimensions the same between a van and truck?

Ryan.
