head gaskets

just got back from west virginia, total 1600 miles round trip, before this trip I had a lot of issues with the truck, my dealer has taken care of all of them except the head gaskets, now mind you that the truck ran great on this last trip, and I forgot to mention that we towed a 24' enclosed car hauler that weighed 7000 plus lbs.
also on this trip it didn't spew any anti freeze like it would normally do in the past when towing this heavy, I believe that it has something to do with the lower temps, it was below 90, and when it had the problem with the antifreeze spewing the temps were over 90 close to 100.
as per fomoco the head gaskets and egr cooler have to be replaced to take care of the antifreeze spewing, is this something that I should be worried about? or is it routine for the dealers to do this extensive of a job, I'm just really nervous about it. Is it true that they have to pull the engine to do head gaskets? and if it is, do they pull the cab off the frame to do this? I'm afraid my truck will never be the same

Is it routine?...unfortunatley yes ...Ford has done quite a bit of HG replacement. Some dealers have more experience than others...so I would call around and ask to see who has done the most. In other words if your dealer hasn't done any...I would not let them use my truck as a training tool.

Some dealers raise the cab (yes off the frame) to get at the engine and some pull the engine without raising the cab.

Red face

thanks bear hunter, I'll be calling on tuesday to set up appointment, and yes I do believe that they have the experience, they always have a lot of 6.0's that are being worked on, and it has been the same tech that works on my truck

Go to flatratetech.com and click on the SUV body removal link on the left for some pictures. There will be pictures of the pickup too.

I work at a Ford dealer in Annapolis,Md.......I've done 5 HG jobs in the past month and 4 6.0 motor swaps total in the past year or so.....I pull the cab every time. Easier and faster that way.

Wedwokt, could it be they didn't pull the cab because of the shell. It is close to the cab.I had coolent blow out the cap on a hot day pulling up hills. Not a lot , just enough to make a little mess under the hood. The dealer blamed it on the radiator cap and replaced it. What were the complaints for the head gaskert jobs you did. How did you test them to verify the gaskets were bad. Thanks for any help.

both times they replaced the engine on my 6.0, they took the whole front end apart. the only thing left was the two framerails, side fenders, and an axle/components. they didnt lift the cab. by the second time replacing it, the guy had this particular truck down-pat.
