I have a 99 F350 SD CC with the 7.3L diesel. The engine is louder than normal and I have been told by 4 mechanics that it is the Tourque converer coming apart... I understand this was a problem with many..
I am thinking of changing it out before it blows the tranny. I have 67K miles on it. I don't haul any heavy loads so that is probably why it has lasted so long.
My question is which tourque converter is a good replacement?
Do I go back to a Ford one, which still may have the problem?
Do I settle for an aftermarket like BD, Banks, or any number of others??
With so many already replaced I thought I would ask which brand most were replaced with and how are they holding up?
I don't want to go through this again.
I may just trade it and get a new 2006 6.0L with a manual tranny
There are alot of very good aftermarket torque converters on the market. All of the good ones are expensive. If you do not plan on doing any mods or towing, probably a stock replacement would be ok (and alot cheaper), but for my piece of mind, I would go with a triple disc, billet converter, brand of your choice. These converters are nearly bulletproof. I replaced the original tq with a standard replacement at 84,000 miles. 24,000 miles later the tq was toast again. This time I put in a Banks and it was a noticable difference. I do have some mods and tow, so mine was worked hard, but that is what I bought the truck for!
I was thinking of a Banks converter. I understand they recommend the Trans command module. I haven't done any mods because I didn't want to blow the trans or converter.
