I just replaced the water pump on my 97 f-350 with the psd. I replaced it with a rebuilt one not new ford parts. I now notice it runs a little hotter on the gauge after the change. Definatly not as cool as it did before the change. Is this normal? did I have a heavy duty factory pump and now I got a regular water pump? or is there even any difference . The napa dealers book says only one type for the 97 psd year. One more thing, when I picked up the truck I noticed antifreeze on the ground, took the truck for a drive down the highway and thats when I noticed the higher running temp but also leaking antifreeze. Back to the shop, they pressure test it this time and I have a pinhole leak in the rad core. Could the pinhole leak cause the system to run hotter than normal due to not running at the proper pressures. Long winded but appreciate any feedback. I will be taking out the rad this weekend and having it repaired. I will check the thermostat at the same time to make sure its installed right. Thanks again. I will check back in a day or two.
You say you just replaced the pump. But you actually "had it replaced", right?
Looks to me like the yeahoos that did your water pump put a hole in your radiator while doing the job. Likely bumped the radiator with the fan/clutch combination while getting the shroud out. If the hole is on the side of the radiator facing the fan, that's what happened. They might want to fix it for free now that you know how it happened.
This kind of thing is the reason most of us here do our own wrenching, to take greater care of our trucks than someone who has to bang 'em out fast (and apparently careless, too).
Stick around and learn. These trucks aren't rocket science. Very straight forward once you get the experience of hundreds of others here behind you. Then you can forget the yeahoos.
Hey Springerpop. You are right on the money. I pulled the rad yesterday and I have one hitmark through the alum tube on the inside of the rad. I also have 3 more hit marks but they did not puncture. Rad went in today and $133.00 later I get my rad back. I will be stopping by the rad shop tomorow and see what they say. One note, being a bodyman for the last 15 plus years I do most of my repairs but time was a issue and I thought it faster to take it where two of my freinds are mechanics. The kicker is before I got to the rad shop I stopped by the shop and showed my friend the damage. He did pull the fan assy and schroud out at the same time. The hit marks match the width of a fan blade. I went to my friend showed him the damage and asked him face to face is this a shop problem or mine. Sad to say he would not commit to it. Oh well, I may call his boss and see what he says about it. Thanks for your reply, I just hope the repairs hold up over time. Chow
In my experience, if you took it to a professional radiator shop, the kind that only do radiators and heater cores, and don't even do R&R's, then you're in pretty good luck. I have a local rad shop. That's all they do, and I've never had a problem with their repairs, be it solder, crimp, move necks, etc, etc.
If they're good, it should be almost as good as new. This kind of thing isn't rocket science....... to them! I would never attempt a repair on an aluminum core.
Just a damn shame that your buddy's shop isn't "stand up" about this. Live and learn.
At least you mostly do your own wrenching. As you already know, it won't happen this way to you again.
