As many of you know I lost my youngest son last year about this time and now I wish to rework his old truck and use it as a daily runner. With the price of gas now days I would like to consider a package that will give give me power when needed and enconomy when it is driven by itself. I plan to pull a boat and camper with it but it will have to be used to transport aircraft interiors as well. I am considering an AOD and have talked to the instructor at the local tech school that says he can put a good tranny together to do the job. He suggests getting an AOD out of a police car or a pre 91 truck. I am interested in developing a 400 or redoing the 360 into something more formitable. Open to any ideas but have to figure out a combination that works. I was also given a 71 F-250 by a friend that has a 360 with a C-6 tranny. Thanks for your time.
It is very hard to get both power and fuel ecomony at the same time - you always have to compromise between the two. I like the FE engines - that 360 has the same bore as a 390 and a 410, just different crankshafts. Those are almost free cubic inches.
It is easy to get 400 horses out of a FE with off the shelf components - if you visit the FE forum they have several basic builds listed for what ever you want.
I have no real knowledge of the 400 - but I understand it is no better than the FE. I expect you could get around 14 MPG from either, driving empty and reasonable. Some people claim more, most do not do this well. It comes down to gearing and driving.
I don't think the AOD will bolt to a FE, but someone must build an adapter. Given that you have 360s with C6s now, that is the way I would go. That is, upgrade to a 390 or 410 with some reasonable performance parts and run the C6.
