Motorcraft Oil

I have a question about MotorCraft Oil. I'm tired of paying Ford $120 to change my oil so I figured I'd do it myself. I bought 15qts of MotorCraft 5w20 (recommended for the 6.0). There is a label on the outside "gasoline engines only" will this work for my PSD 6.0?

thanks

man if they have been putting 5w20 in your engine, good luck! If you bought 5w20 for a diesel you might be better off letting Ford do it!

Well thank you. I'll go back and check the owners manual but I though it said 5w20 was the recommend oil. Thats why I thought I would check with someone first.

Tks.

5W20 is the recommended oil for *GAS* engines. 15W40 is the recommended oil for the 6.0 PSD. Run that 5W20 in the diesel and Bad Things will happen.

mdf250,
I have been using delo 400 15/40 and have had no problems. If you have low miles on your truck, this would probably be a good choice for you. they say not to run synthetic until the moving parts break in and seat a bit. I choose to stay with the Delo400, but this is personal choice. Now that my engine has a few miles on it, I would consider switching to synthetic if I had lots of dough. I don't however so I will stay with Delo400. Still can't go wrong there. Personal choice. There have been some posts stating to use oil that is CI4+ rated. Delo400 is CI4+ rated so that is good.
Use caution when discussing oil. I have seen some emotional points of view related to that.
Oh Yeah, another thing is to not fill all the way to the full line. Injector problems may result. I fill mine with 13.5 quarts of Delo400 and change the filter.
Wal Mart (which is also food for emotional discussion) does a very inexpensive job on oil changes compared to Ford. If you decide to use them, keep an eye on the oil changers to ensure it is being done correctly. Give them specific direction ie. torque spec, amount of oil to fill etc and you should be okay. Or just do it yourself. It really isn't hard at all. Use your 6.0 supplement that came with your truck for specifics.
Good Luck and stay clean, Tim

Make sure you are reading the Diesel manual that came with your truck. The regular manual has no info on the diesel engine.Use 15/40.Brand is up to you.

Just make sure you check the certification for CI4+,that is the latest/greatest rating. Any oil with that certification will do, and I also used the Motorcraft for a few oil changes. I switched to a 5W-40 synthetic at 35,000 and am getting about 1mpg better. The Rotella was my choice, mostly due to cost. A lot of the owners are using Mobil 1 Truck&Suv 5W-40, but it is a little more expensive but only about $7 or so more for an oil change if you buy at Wally World and get the 5qt. jugs. I have heard Wally also carries a Fram labeled oil filter as well as the Motorcraft label. As others have said, watch that oil level, and make sure you unscrew the filter cap before you put your drain plug back in, or the oil in the filter housing will not drain out. I had to "educate" my quick lube tech about that. He wanted to argue, but did it anyway. That was the last time I let them change my oil. And watch that oil level. My '03 only takes 13 quarts, some others around 14 to keep it between the low and full marks. You can also put a Fumoto valve or equivalent in place of your drain plug if you want. Personally, I like the magnetic stock plug. It's still the easiest oil change I've ever done on any vehicle. Good luck.

you purchased what for your diesel? even me a dumb gas owner knows better.
5w40 or 15w40 in there and make sure it states diesel on the bottle. and yes you can save a bundle being a do it my selfer.
get a fomoto drain valve, a very big drain pan, motorcraft filter, some plastic gloves for your hands and have a go at it. it's not hard at all

Since Ford recommends a light weight oil in colder climates, we're using Amsoil series 3000 5W-30 diesel oil. The 6.0's responded with smoother idel, .4 to .7 mpg increase, and a little quieter. Not sure why although we suspect the injector oil circuit prefers the thinner oil. Maybe the thinner oil allow a slight advance in injector timing? Whatever it is we will keep the Amsoil per our tech.

No I'm not a dealer, just a very happy customer with 17 6.0's.

Lighter-weight oil in colder climates? I hope your location in McKinney isn't McKinney, TX.

Hey give him a break guys... its an honest mistake...at least he had the where with all to post here and make sure.

I'll tell you whats worse...putting gasoline in a diesel...and there have been a few "experienced" people on these boards that have done that.

...but to answer your question yes its 15W40

Just make sure its CI-4+ rated...you'll see it on the back of the bottle. I have been using 15W40 Rotella-T and she's been running like a champ.

Before you change your oil...look into getting a FUMOTO valve at

http://www.fumotovalve.com/merchant.cfm?id=82&step=2

The stock number for a SD is F111. I got the one with the nipple (F111N) so I can attach a tube and drain directly into empty gallon jugs....no more oil pan.

Since you are starting to do this for the first time here are a few tips:

1. Put in 13.5qts to 14qts first ( I have found 14 puts me at mid hash mark )
2. Run your engine for a few minutes
3. Shut it off and let it sit for a few more minutes
4. Take a dipstick reading.
5. If it is in the middle or "mid hash" mark...leave it alone and do not add anymore. You may have to take a couple readings to be sure because the dipstick is kinda hard to read.

Check out this URL, PCO 15W40 is the only Amsoil oil that is CI-4+ API certified:

http://eolcs.api.org/DisplayLicenseI...LicenseNo=0995

You have to use API certified oil for Ford's warranty to stay valid.

Well I read the manual wrong, so I went today and got some Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40. Got my oil changed, but I got the standard 15 quart oil pan with the small hole in the center. Well warm oil coming out of a F350 comes out of the truck faster than it'll drain in the oil pan...what a mess.. I put about 14 quarts in that got me just above the center mark on the dip stick. I've learned for the next time, but I'll be changing my own from now on.

Thanks for all the advice.
