Hey, i just dropped my engine in about a week ago. Hooked everything up turns over but doesnt fire. I did a Through check on the electrical system and everything checks ok far as voltage goes. I did buy a MSD coil and it gets sort of warm after trying to turn it over for a while but this doesnt happen when i try two of my other stock ignition coils. every now and then i get a puff of smoke from the headers coming off the engine so i know its firing sort of as well as i bought new spark plugs, wires, and distrbutor. I also bought a new iginition module because that was next on the list that didnt change a thing. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHATS WRONG!!!! id really appreacate it if you had any idea whatsoever as to what to do with this beast.
What did you have the engine out for? How did you set the static timing? The coil should not get hot. And just because you get a puff of smoke every once in a while does mean your ignition is working right. You need a spark tester.
yeah ill pick up a spark tester today sometime. we had the engine out because we had to pull it from another truck as well as i replaced the manafold on it. As far as static timing goes we didnt mess with the timing but ill get a light and check it out. any other suggestions?
If you replaced the intake manifold, you had the dist. out and it it didn't get put back in right, that's why the motor won't run. Anytime a dist. is out the timing has to be reset or rechecked at least.
ok ill do that too but were not getting any electricty from the coil here. i checked by pulling the wire of the distrobutor and taking a pair of plyers and holding the plug to the engine block you should see a spark from the wire to the block there wasnt one. any ideas?
hmm see i tested the volts to the coil thats ok ive tryed reverseing the coil wires just incase i messed up i dont get anywhere i dono about the ignition bos? but the sensor is getting power i really appreacte the help here i dont think id get anywhere without it.
yeah, i will this is a recap of what ive done since ive been out. i went out and bought a new ignition module 2 of them from diffrent companies and they dont seem to change the turnover problem. so i went out and bought a new stator (its the magnet inside the distobutor) and that didnt change anything. ive checked every electrical connection and tested the wires and everything is ok!!! but it still wont put out any voltage from the coil...... now i was told by a friend other than running tests with a voltage meter i chould just unplug the wire from the distobutor and take some insulated plyers and hold it to the block and at night should be able to see a spark shoot from the cable to the engine. i have yet to see this happen... i have checked all under dash electrical items. they are all in good shape... if ANYONE has ANY suggestions to what the hell is wrong with this beast then please let me know. i really need to get this thing started before winter. oh and btw i know im getting gas the sparkplugs are a little wet after about an hour of trying to turn it over. (wether this is a good thing or not i dono)
Check all your ground circuts. Ground the distributor with a seperate wire to the distributor body. Re check all your hook ups to you ign control module against mfg wiring diagram. Check tach hookup if you have one. Check any connections or wiring splices made.
ok. i re did all the grounds and checked all the voltages again and it doesnt seem to be a problem but there is one wire on the igniton module that is reading half of what it should be. dono if that matters but i was just gonna get a new electrical kit for it. i know SVO sells one for my ford i have a 1979 460 i searched the internet and didnt find what i was looking for. alot of the electrical kits are seprated into parts like ignition module coil harness and all that im looking for the entire kit. if anyone knows where i can find one please say

Hey 1981 F250, have you checked on the problem I'm having? Look at my post, Duraspark II, and Igntion gremlins....
What wire at the module are you only getting half Voltage. At the ballast resistor bypass circuit, mine is getting 6.2 volts. ... Our troubles are sounding similar...Holler at me.
