Mower carb question. did something stupid HELLP!!!!
we have a push mower (mtd) with a briggs & stratton motor. i tipped the mower upside down to pull something out of the blades (yes it was off) then i had it tipped sorta with the front tipped way down to spray the bottom out (it was REALLY gunked up with grass etc...) upon startup the motor started to burn oil. i have some oil up in the carb and the exhaust is actually shooting out oil as it burns.
i hope i didn't ruin this, i'm guessing the carb needs to be cleaned now. or can i just let it sit? actually the carb has some oil in it now so it should be cleaned. what else should i do? i really need some tips. i feel DUMB.
I've been tinkering with B&S engines since I was a kid. I have done the same thing.
Nothing is really hurt, by oil going into the carb, then burning in the combustion chamber. (Just a lot of smoke, for a couple of minutes.)
Just check your oil level (in the crankcase ) before you run the engine, next time.
Next time, when you tip the mower, have either the carb 'up' and/or the cylinder head. This will prevent the oil from doing what it did, this time.
You probably had oil run out the exhaust valve and puddle in the muffler. After it got hot it started smoking until it all burned out.
I ran a small engine shop for several years and I have seen this a lot. Oil will seep past the rings when the engine is tipped cylinder down.
What you have to worry about when tipping the cylinder down, is the cylinder filling with oil without the exhaust valve open. Then when you try to start the engine it will either hydrolock, or bend a rod.
hard to kill a briggs for sure. i was cleaning my little mower 5.5 and what i thought was brake cleaner was starter fluid. I guess a bunch of it got up into the filter because when i started it up, it was a screaming and would not shut off. so what i did was start mowing. it ran like that for about 15 minutes while i was doing the back forty behind the house. which i hadnt mowed in almost a month so it was about 8 inchs tall. i was shooting grass 30 feet out my discharge chute. when it finally died i figured it would never run again, but the next day filled it with gas and mowed the front like normal. gotta love a briggs
LOL I'm glad i'm not the only one that's done something stupid. i read this thing on the briggs website. this guy asked the question "i accidently put oil in my gas tank, it's burning oil now WHAT DO I DO!?!?!" atleast i've never done that
