My 74 has always had a problem with it's rear leaf spring twisting (which I think is called spring wrap). In the earlier years it mostly occured on hard acceleration or hard braking. Now days (17 years later), it does it even on mild pull outs and stops. I'm thinking the rear spring are starting to get tired on me. I know the best bet would be to replace with new springs but shipping alone to Hawaii is $200+ per pair! I'm wondering if anyone has tried the hellwig helper springs specificly designed to prevent spring wrap up. I don't want to get the strut type that mounts from the center spring plate to the front spring mount which are actually pretty inexpensive, because I feel they limit the springs movement on the trail. What do you guys suggest I do before I replace my rear leaf springs.
I considered that but the closest spring shop is located on the other Island and want me to send them my old ones via air freight. He'd rework the old ones and add a leaf like you mentioned then send them back via air freight again. It would price almost the same as ordering new. Besides that I would have to down my truck for a couple of weeks. Thanks for your reply
Lots of options for axle wrap. Do a search and see what you come up with, but you are likely looking at new springs sometime down the road. Check to make sure your u-bolt nuts are tight, bushings are intact, and your shocks are good.
