I've had this 95 conversion van for about two months now and am slowly getting more familiar with it.
A couple of (long winded) questions:
The console on the engine cover: It has two open positions: One is all the way open, like a glove box. The other has a fold up affair that is more like a half open with cupholers in the section that tils up and latches. Maybe this is the factory setup?
The problem is one of it's "hinges" is broke off and one side of the lid is cracked and doesn't latch in place (either half open or closed) very securely.
Does anyone know a source for a replacement console with better cupholders or any other configuration? Or maybe just a replacement for this one?
It appears to have a quick release inside on the carpeted engine cover-a piece of spring steel that I can't get to do anything. Is there a secret removal process?
The other question is the idle seems to get just a bit rough is I sit for more than five seconds. It has decreased since I had the injectors cleaned and changed the fuel filter but it's still noticable. What else should I be checking?
The hindges break. I have JB welded one side of mine twice. I haven't looked for anything else. It was a nice try but not the best. The new ones are different, not sure if new one would fit.
Your console sounds like a "factory" unit. They are expensive (almost $300 the last time I checked) You might try a junkyard. You'll find a lot of them in the same condition. '92 thru '96 are the same. There is a "release" in the lower compartment of the console that you pull out while lifting upwards on the console. It should slide right off. Have not seen one on e-bay for a long time either. As far as the rough idle, it sounds like a tune-up with Motorcraft parts is in order. Quality wires are very important on the v-8 engines. John
Thanks y'all (Jeffnick, your link didn't work for me). I was afraid it was the factory unit.
I have found the new ones-you're right they won't fit, the new unit is more round.
I did see a walnut version of a drink tray with a glove box, but I couldn't tell how big the glove box is.
I guess I'll see what it looks like with out it.
Thanks again.
I was told that it works on a 94 to 02 if I have a conversion van with an existing console that pulls off. This engine cover/ console thing seems to be a bit confusing. From what pics I've seen the cover itself is unchanged but the add on console is different. Possibly the cover is different on the conversion vans. If I could add the above console to mine which is just the cover with a stupid clip on bucket even if I had to make it fit I would use it.
Jeffnick posted the pic as if it fits but no one ever responded.
Sorry for the double post but I can't edit past 60 minutes of posting.
That console shown, has 2 sliding holes on the back, to correspond to 2 posts sticking out of the flat of the engine cover. That's all that holds it onto the engine cover. Don't know if that helps.
Mine is just like that picture, and it's a Jayco conversion.
So can I get it to work on this? This is my cover with the bucket pulled off. If I can figure out a way to attach it will it work or do I need a different cover?
After looking at mine, I don't think it's going to fit at all. It's 3 posts and not 2 like I thought. It has 2 at the top and 1 down low, which looks to be lower than your vertical face goes.
Here's the best I can do while at work. I think it's too much difference. The left upper post is not in the picture. I couldn't see my cellphone screen because of the sun and I was in a hurry. Looking at the pic, I just noticed the clips at the bottom to hold the bottom in too.
BTW, the cover sucks so look for something else anyway. The lower bin doesn't hold much and the upper bin, since it has no door, always has things falling out of it. I'm not sure what the little cup holders are for as I've not found many cups that small.
