Do all Excursions wander or is it me? I had a 00 excusion 4X4 diesel and now an 03 4X4 diesel (with 47,000 miles). Both of them, it seemed as though you had to stay on top of the steering, the 03 is better, but it still wanders. Is there something I can do make the steering more stable? Thanks for the help.
Hellwig sway bar and bilsteins all around helped my X. Can drive with one arm now without any corrections. Allows me to eat, drink, make cold coffee from instant, talk on the phone while driving with one arm.
LandYot Radius Rods. Do a search, here and on the other boards.
The importance of them cannot be overstated for improving the handling and safety of the Excursion.
I started wiith front and rear swaybars, added the high-end, high$$ Bilstein shocks, and then installed the Land Yot GenII radius rods. The RR's dramatically improved all aspects of the vehicles handling, and of course especially the wander.
I think LandYot should get some kind of award, and I am certain of the fact that his RR's have saved lives and property.
The other mods are fine, but the Radius Rods are final!

Thanks for the help - I know quiteman put anti-sway bars on the front and back, but did you also "Hello", or did you just need them on the front?
Thanks.
The front has a factory swaybar already. So just added a Hellwig Sway bar to the rear. So just get the rear one unless you want a even bigger front sway bar which Hellwig also has. Personally I didn't think I needed a bigger front sway bar. Immedially you will notice the before heavy plowing front end shift to the rear when going around corners for very neutral handling. http://www.hellwigproducts.com/
Got mine from JC Whitney.
Thanks Hello. I just ordered the Hellwig sway bar from JC Whitney, 10% off and free shipping - what a deal. Can't wait till it gets here and I get it on. Thanks again for all of your help. This is the best site.
Good luck with the installation. If you can install the rear shocks at the same time, it will be easier since the Bilsteins are compressed up ready to drop in. If not you have to compress the stock ones back up the mounts. I used a sissors jack to do that. Take your time. The mounts are very heavy, and turning a wrench with locknuts is very tedious. Took me 6 hours and did it at night with worklights in my driveway. If you can do this you can also install the front shocks easily. Next day you will be sore though!
BTW you will have 4 large nuts left over. They will be used to double nut the U bolts. You won't find this in the instructions.
I just received my Hellwig anti-sway bar, and guess what, I have a factory one already on the rear. Will it really be worth it to take off the factory one and replace it with the new one. The Hellwig is thicker, just don't know if the handling will be that much better. Has anyone replaced their factory one? Thanks for the help.
The Helwig bar is thicker, and mounts further out towards the wheels, giving it more mechanical advantage. If you off-road a lot the factory one allows more wheel articulation. If you don't then you don't much care about that and the Hellwig would be fine, better than stock even.
Neither one will make a difference anything like Radius Rods will. To fix wander either get radius rods as previously discussed, or airbags.
