one of my parts trucks has a tilt steering column and i would like to put it in my truck. is this a problem or a fairly simple swap. ive never taken one out and i don't want to mess up my truck or the other steering column.
I just did mine on saturday. It was very easy to do.Just take your time and double check the wire harness cause 3 wires were a different color than was on my 77. So I had to hunt them done(Down) one by one to see where they connected. Also, the nuetral safety switch has no place to mount on the newer column. I put mine on the column with a clamp to get it to start. If you do this put a vacuum cap (rubber type) over the metal so you don't hurt your finger everytime you start the truck good luck. The transmission shift lever from the end of the column to the transmission is sometimes quite difficult to disconnect.
I usually disconnect it at the tranny(it's easier).
Un-bolt the steering to rag joint first.
Disconnect the column wiring.
Next remove 3 of the 4 bolts on the firewall > then slowly undo the 2 nuts from under the dash until there is one turn left to remove > Remove the 4th bolt from the firewall > then while holding the column up remove the 2 nuts from under the dash and the column is ready to be pulled into the cab.

I've got a question on the same subject, so please excuse my not starting a new post.
I have to remove a tilt column as well - and I understand that part - but I would like to separate the steering wheel from the column - is it better to do this before or after? And what pointers can you fellows provide?
Thanks!
Just buy a $9.00 steering wheel puller.
Two screws off pops the center section of the wheel >
then the puller to remove the wheel.
I suggest removing the signal light lever as well, first.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Aug-02 AT 10:57 PM (EST)]It's easier to get the wheel off while it's still attached to the truck. Some times you have to get a little insistent on the old puller like "tapping" on the puller head bolt while it's tightened up.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Aug-02 AT 00:03 AM (EST)]I got the puller - $9.00 and it worked slick as could be - the steering wheel just 'popped' right off!
PROBLEM - any suggestions for dealing with a stubborn rag joint?
Did I mention I am using 'Blue' (the parts truck) as hands on training?
