About two weeks ago I had some tread separation on my '01 4WD Supercrew, which is equipped with the original General Grabber AW tires. I was towing a car on a trailer (within the tounge weight and towing capacity of the truck), and started experiencing a vibration. I visually checked and kicked all the tires, which seemed to be OK, but after about five miles the vibration got much worse, so I stopped and checked the tires again to find that one of the rears was badly misshapen and chunks of tread were coming off!
Fortunately, I had picked a state route (instead of interstate), so my speed never got above 55mph.
General Tire wants me to pay $43 plus mounting and balancing for a new tire. The other tires on the truck measure out to 7/32 tread depth, and the new tire is 11/32. The truck had 16940 miles at the time this happened.
I probably wouldn't be posting if the tire had totally failed, and my wife (would be a widow) would be suing General Tire for several million.
Anyone else have this trouble? General Tire had a major recall for this same tire, in a different size, that was fitted to Ford & Lincoln SUV's.
Thanks in advance! And if you ever feel a vibration develop, DON'T IGNORE IT!!!
