Ok guys. I bought a truck off of a fella here last December and it has a 351M with the following goodies:
Commander 950 Pro (TBI)
351m bored .30 over
Street MSD Pro Billet distributor P# 8477
MSD 6A Ignition Box
Edelbrock performer intake
Wide band O2 by holley
MSD High Vibration coil
Mild cam (don't know specs)
Reinforced springs on heads
Super Comp Headers (Ceramic coated)
It took me a while to get the truck running due to work and spending most of my little time off from work helping the kids with homework. Anyway now that I have a little more time to work on it I just got bad news from work and funds are gona be pretty tight in the very near future.
The question is does anyone have any idea how comparabe a fuel injected TBI compared to a carb as far as performance and economy. I've read both sides of the story (not many though) and it seems to be a draw with the Commander system and a well tuned carb. Does anyone have any experience there? I'm pretty sure there is no competition between the carb and the Commander with multy port (which it has the capability) but I don't have a multyport set up and it sounds pricy to get the intake and the rest of the hardware. The truck is just for daily driving so I wont realy do any racing. So, having said that much, should I sell the Commander pro and get funds to finish up the project or should I keep it and upgrade later? Don't know how long beffore work gets any better if any so funds may be hard to come by.
Does anyone have any idea how much it cost to get a multyport intake and hardware such as runners, injectors, etc.......
Holley doesn't make a multiport intake for the M block, so you would have to have your intake modified ($). The Commander system is ok, but pretty limited as to tuning. For your engine, you would'nt see any difference between the TBI and MPFI systems.
What exactly do you mean by
"The Commander system is ok, but pretty limited as to tuning."
I'm seriously looking at buying the commander 950 TBI system. Is there something better that I should be looking at?
I'm running a 460 in a 82 F250. It has L&L headers, 9.2 - 1 compression, ported heads and a comp cams X4262H cam. I use this truck for towing & plowing. I am looking for the nice quick & easy starting & smooth idle that my Fuel injected cars have.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!
The maps pre-loaded into the computer don't allow for very much tweaking, and I have heard of "dead spot" problems with them, especially when working at the high or low ends of the fuel maps.
I talked to a guy who installed it on a Pantera with a 351C and he claims to love it. He says it works great. I did not get to make mine work good enough but I am beggining to find out that I have other issues on the engine that kept me from tuning it right. I went and bought an eddelbrock 1406 and it was not working properly. It turns out the acceleration pump was plugged out of the box. Got that going and now the truck dies after fast acceleration and deceleration. It dies after I let go of the gas quickly. I tried a holly that I know was working good on another engine and it does the same thing. What the heck do I need to look at now. All this is a learning curve for me. I don't know much about engines but love to work with them and am very mechanicaly enclined.

What??? You're probably thinking of the old Pro-jection. I have a Commander 950 TBI system on my 390. The thing is totally programmable. I can change the entire fuel map, any where I want. Say I have a lean spot at 2500rpm, at part throttle. I find that spot on the fuel map, make changes accordingly, and go.
I'm just going on what I've heard- I wish I could afford to test each system and report on it, but that's a bit out of the budget right now.
On second thought-
Now taking donations for carburetor and EFI testing! I'll be sure to thoroughly test, then also sell on ebay to find it's fair resale value.........
