Where is the oxygen sensor located on a 2000 3.0 litre Ranger. Also, is it easy to replace and what might the cost be to purcase? I see that this may be a critical component when perfoming tuneups and I would guess that mine is an original sensor.
If you can change a spark plug you can change an oxygen sensor. On some you may need a special socket if you can't get a wrench on it. The socket looks like a deep socket with a slot for the wire.
Autozone will loan you the wrench to replace the O2 sensors. you pay a deposit on the wrench which you get back when you return it. the sensors run about $50.00 each.
You might also be able to use a regular 7/8" wrench (or 22mm) as long as the sensors aren't siezed in place (they usually aren't).
They thread directly into your exhaust pipe and plug into a connector usually clipped onto the transmission or cross member.
Keep in mind your truck has FOUR oxygen sensors (one on each pipe before the converters - AKA upstream, and one on each pipe after the converters - AKA downstream, or catalyst monitors) make sure you're replacing the correct ones.
The two in the back (catalyst monitors) are typically used only as a reference so the computer can tell how well your catalytic converters are working, so if you're replacing them for maintenance only, I would replace only the front two.
Bank 1 = Same side as cylinder #1 (passenger side I believe)
Bank 2 = Opposite side as cylinder #1
Sensor 1 = Upstream (front)
Sensor 2 = Downstream (rear)
