Has anyone tried using a 75-76, 4X4 truck power steering gear to convert their 67-72 4X4 to power steering???? If so, what did you have to do to make it work????
I know that my Brother-in-laws 75 F100 4x4 has power assisted steering, not the best for four wheeling, but works good for driving. I'm using a 87 Toyota steering box on my 66 F-100 4x4. This works real good for everything that I do with my truck.
Hope you don't mind but I have a few questions for you bertha66. I think the 66 4X4 and the 67 4X4 steering was basically the same. Does that Toyota box bolt right up to the outside of the frame rail, did you have to fabricate a new braket? What kind of modifications did you have to do, did you have to reverse the rotation of the gear box? Did your pitman arm fit properly? Which P/S pump did you go with, saginaw, bendix or ford? Where did you get hoses that were the proper length?
Yes, the steering on the 66 and 67 are the same. The Toyota, it came off of a 87 4x4, fit in the same place as the Ford, had to drill and tap new holes. Toyota box is a little shorter, so I notched the frame where the pitman arm goes under the frame, frame at this spot is very thick and has no problems. The gear box rotates the same way as the Ford, turns lock to lock 4 1/4 turns, the Ford 4 1/2 turns. I used the Toyota pitman arm, it has a ball joint stud on it, so I had to make a steering link that goes from the box to the drag link. I used bottom part of the ford, and the top part I cut a piece out of a Chevy drag link that had a hole in it that fit the Toyota ball jouint on the pitman arm. I had a machine shop tread them togather with a LT/RT treaded turn buckel I kgot off the old Chevy drag link. Since I had the machine shop working on this I cut off the ball joint on my drag link that was bad and nonreplaceable, and treaded one on that is replaceable. Got a pump off a 77 F-100 with a 360, sorry I don't know the name of it, It's round and the dipstick sticks out of the top back, if that helps. I used the hydrolic lines from the Toyota, had to cut off the pressure end and put on a end that would work on the Ford pump. When you get a pump from a wrecking yard also get the pulley off the engine to run the pump. I did have to shorten the steering column about 3". Sorry I don't have a digi camra to send pictures. let me know if you need any more infro. I did the job inclueding machine work for $275 about 3 years ago.

Thanks Bertha66, I can get a Toyota box from the local salvage yard for $75. I was unsure of how to get P/S on my truck and I am tired of turning 35 inch tires with a manual box. You have been a great help!
