power steering

I currently own a 1977 Ford F-250 4x4. It has the old style "power valve" power steering. That is the type that has a "spool valve" mounted on the steering box pitman arm. That valve controls hydraulic pressure sent to a hydraulic cylinder mounted to the steering center link.Just like the steering say found on a old 67 Fairlane, only bigger. This type of steering was used on Ford trucks for only a few years. My problem is that the power valve on my truck leaks horribly.I can't find remanufactured or even good used power valves for this truck. Does anybody know a source for them,or perhaps a source for "kits" to reseal them? It has already been recomended to me to convert to the later model type of power steering system. I'm just not in a position to tackle that project right now. I would like to just quickly repair what I already have. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Don't know what part of the country you are in, but if Wildebeast isn't close enough to help, I am in Central Oregon and have the same "slave" package out of a '74 hi-boy. I'd like to find a good home for it.

...just did mine and it's primo. He did the valve, the slave cylinder, the lines, and the pump, for 600. He even made a new shaft for the slave. He knows the system well and has the parts.

I'm new to the list and joined to obtain information about that blasted power steering system on my ole 75 F-250 4X4 farm truck.

I assume the we are talking about the same steering unit. The one with 4 hoses coming out of the top. None of the hydraulics are hooked directly to the steering gear itself. Am I correct?

Anyway, mine leaks terribly on the front end where the housing and cap join. Steering wheel drifts badly to the right. Been that way since I purchased it some 5 years ago.

Local Ford dealer says they don't have a kit or anything with which to fix it. What!? Said they couldn't get anything like that for trucks older than 1980.

That's just great! Now what am I going to do? Can't fix it so I guess that means replace the entire power steering system. Will the bone yards have something I can use? Most vehicles under 1990 have already been crushed.

Am I screwed or is there a unit I can install from a salvage yard? The old truck is not very good bodywise but is otherwise mechanically sound and is ideal for banging around on the farm here in Tennessee.

Kendall , read the post #4 as he gives an address of a shop that completely rebuilt his system in arizona , for 600-- you will need the parts from either a 78 or 79 , f250 , 4x4 , only those two years will work---there is a tech article in the tech section(on the right side of your screen) on how to do the conversion-----there is alot info available from prior postings-----you have to use the "search function" to locate them!!!!! fd

$600 way to expensive. I only paid $700 for entire truck. Tech article says gear from 77 thru 79 works. Chances of finding one of these trucks not very good. And, if I found one the cost plus installaltion would still be more than I am willing dish out. Last night I obtained information about a seal kit for the power assist unit I now have. If that doesn't pan out it's over the bluff for her.

I found a new control valve today for mine at Auto Zone, $180. See "Control Valve" post here.

Again thank you everybody! This question is for Flatliner.
I live in Northern Calif.I can't seem to find a phone number for Auto Zone. This sounds like the way I want to go for right now. Could you please post their phone number.Maybe if they have a 800 number. In the meantime I will keep looking for it. Thank you in advance. Tenderblob.

The "kits" to repair the control valve are still available at Ford Dealers, however you can dissassemble the valve and replace the o-rings to fix your leak. I have replaced the o-rings in my "74" three times now.

Anyone have the repair kit part number? My Ford dealer here isn't too swift. I need ammunition. I disassembled mine because of severe leaking on the "O" ring end. Other end has a regular gasket but I don't think it was leaking there. I noticed in the center of the "O" ring there appears to be some sort of diaphram and upon initial inspection appears torn. Am I assuming correctly? Haven't tried to take it off or anything. Also, when I removed the spring tensioning nut upon disassembly I failed to count the turns. I assume this plays a role in balancing hydraulic flow. Guess I'll just have to guess at how much to retighten it unless someone can give me some pointers. The steering has always drifted right severely since purchase.
