Like the title says, which oil do you guys use in your rigs? I just bought a 2001 f-150 S/C O/R, 5.4 with about 58,000 on her.
I"m not sure what has been run through it previously but I was thinking about running semi or full synthetic oil, like quakerstate 4X4 or mobile1 full synthetic. Is there any side effects to switching to semi or full synthetic oil this late in it's life? From what I understand is, it's safe to switch from regular oil to synthetic, but not the other way around?
You guys ever tried engine restorer? I may throw a can in it just for piece of mind.
Also, the truck calls for 5w-20, anybody ever used 5w-30? Does the oil pressure stay at normal levels?
well i would use the motorcraft 5w20 oil and a fl820s filter the oil out performs almost all the other oils in its class with a strong rating of 2.8. do not add the restore!!! that is quick death in a can it is almost 100% copper and other metal shavings in recyled oil. there is no need for addtives at all.

I would use the 5w-20, and a semi-synthetic. I use the Motorcraft. If you do a search on UOA in the oil forum, you will find that this oil gives excellent results. Also as stated, whatever filter you use, make sure it has a good anti-drainback valve. Best for this seem to be MC, Wix, Purolater and a couple of others.

i agree totally,5w 20 motorcraft and fl820.i have hade v covers off many cars and trucks with high miles that use it and the engines look great. and therew is def. no need for restore in the engine.
I use 5w-30 in my 4.6L, and the fl820s oil filter... Pressure is always good and seems to keep the engine in superior shape. If you really want to go to a synthetic oil, it's not a bad investment if you're looking to keep the engine/truck for a long time. I recommend Amsoil, but sometimes it can be hard to find. It's about the best synthetic oil I've ever seen.
