I have a 1976 Ford Courier California Stepside Pickup. It has the B2300 Mazda engine. I'm having problems with it backfiring through the exhaust. It sounds like a popcorn machine when I let off the gas. I'm told it may possibly be the smog pump, but I don't know where it's located or it's function or how to check or unhook it. If anyone can tell me why this is happening, please email me directly at: wbrown8@charter.net - Thanks! Bill
Look for exhaust leaks, a bad anti backfire valve, or a bad smog pump control valve. You need a manual for your truck, then read thru it and compare pictures.
You must be in a rust free state,I haven't seen a courier in Michigan for a long, long time.I know of only one near me and that is sitting on a 76 4x4 frame and is only used off road.
This is a rare truck. It's a California Stepside conversion and believed to be only one of 6 ever produced. It has 28,000 original miles and it's been detailed and modified for show. It has won many trophies. I'll be buying a repair manual to find the parts mentioned and check them. Here's a picture and a link to some more pictures if you'd like to take a look. It's been professionally appraised at $12,500 and will be possibly going up for sale in the near future. Thanks! Bill
