76 courier runs rough under load, occasional backfire, running rich...
hey new here, u guys have no forums or places to post for the old ford courier so i figured i would post it in the '70s section... yeah wut i said above 76 courier runs rough and backfires under load when running rough, i rebuilt the carb, checked the float make sure it was good, replaced the fuel filter, new cap, rotor, wires, plugs gapped them to manufacture spec (.031) it runs rough at lower rpms and backires occasionally under a load, then smooths out at higher rpms. whne i park i can smell the fuel like crazy! runs very rich, set idle mixture screw to where it barely keeps truck running and still does the same thing (about a half turn) then i did it what carb rebuild instructions said (1 3/4-2 turns) anyone have any idea what is causing this its driving me crazy! btw i dont think the carb is the problem. heres a pic of the truck. thanks in advance

if your smelling alot of fuel then the carb must be the problem.....are you positive the float isnt stuck and its overloading itself?? sometimes after a rebuild the float isnt set right and wont close allowing it to keep pumping gas into it, and it would cause symptoms just like you described...use a mirror and look into the carb to see if gas is pouring in during idle, USE A MIRROR, DO NOT LOOK DOWN CARB WHILE MOTOR IS RUNNING CAUSE YOU MIGHT GET A FACEFULL OF FLAMES.....there shouldnt be any gas except when the throttle is applied..........ive often wondered why FTE has never had a courier forum, i guess most courier owners dont know about the site.....i think its great to see a fan of Fords original "little truck"....ive tossed the idea around of putting a courier body on my 78 F-250 4x4's frame just to be different, ive also thought about a pinto wagon with the "moony" side window...but im just wierd like that.... .......anyways, it sounds like you covered all the other bases of your problem, like i said, double check the float and make sure its not overloading...its also possible that the carb it shot and not rebuildable, if all else fails try to find a cheap replacement and see if helps.....

i dont really have to look down into it or use a mirror theres a massive sight glass on one wall of the float bowl u can see everything, when i rebuilt the carb i held it inverted and it was level then whe i put it the other way it hangs down... ill have to get some pictures to describe it.
also bounced the truck up and down to make sure the float was going with it and sure enough its floating but it looks a deep into the gas like i said i need to get pictures i will when i get off work tonight.

My longtime experience and being a former administrator of the site I am only offering you the Inside info on how things are done on FTE.
There are already Courier related threads in the Ranger forum.
That's where they belong
Carburetor questions can go in the Fuel Delivery forum if you have carb related topics.
The Courier is considered a completely different truck than a 73-F series ...that's why the different forums.
"A place for everything & everything in its place"
The people that already answered can follow this thread to the other forum.

I don't like arguing about something so obvious.
I understand but this is the wrong forum though.
This forum is for 73-79 F-series trucks.
The Courier is NOT an F-series truck.
You will get help other in other forums.I may even help out.
The General Automotive forum is for topics that DON'T already have a regular forum on FTE.
A simple Thanks on the" Let you know" post would have been preferred.

Nice pic! The timing of this thread is cool since we have another thread currently going on here in the Ranger Forum regarding the Courier:

If you don't get any feedback here, then maybe some people over in the Fuel Injection & Carburetion Forum might have some ideas.
