1997 Timing Chain Replacement
I have a 1997 explorer with 194000 miles, mostly highway. It jumped time while I was out of town and is now sitting at a repair shop. The time jump did not occur on the highway...I pulled into a location turned it off and when I went to start it it would hardly turn over...back fired etc. A local shop told me that the motor had a lot of sludge build-up and that it was not a good ideal to replace the timing chains. The engine oil was replaced every 3 - 5K using synthetic oil...never burned any oil or smoked.
He wants to replace the engine for $ 4800.00
Any thoughts.

I haven't priced them lately, but I'm fairly positive that you can get a crate motor for under $1000, assuming that yours is actually damaged beyond repair. If the pistons didn't actually make contact w/ the valves then I don't see why it can't just be rebuilt for a few hundred $. There's also the ~$400 wrecking yard used motor option. There's plenty of explorers in the boneyard. What's this guy's labor rate? $$$ For 5K, that motor better be gold-plated!
